ENG 211
Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30-10:45 in Russell
231
ENGL 211, Introduction to Poetry, is a three-credit
elective literature course that surveys poetry
as a distinct literary genre. Students will
study selected lyric, narrative, and dramatic
poems representing varied literary traditions.
They will discuss and write about poetic themes
and structures through reference to relevant cultural
and historical contexts.

Introduction to Poetry can be used to fulfill the general
education Group B Humanities/Literature requirement
for the Liberal Arts A.A. Degree. The course can
also serve as a Humanities elective for other degree
programs.
ENGL 211 is especially recommended for poetry haters
(you'll learn to love it!), poetry lovers (you'll discover
new poetic worlds), English or education majors (you'll
enrich your professional preparation), and students
who prefer short, intensive reading experiences.
The course will offer frequent opportunities for small
group discussions, student presentations, and informal
creative expression. We will even sample non-mainstream
poetic genres, such as song lyrics, spoken-word/ performance
poetry and children's poetry. Course content will
be flexible to accommodate students' preferences and
program needs. Course experiences will include
guest poets and the possibility of an off-campus trip.
