Course Title: BUSN 210 Business Communications
Course Description: A study of the principles underlying effective communication in business. The principles and strategies presented in this course will enable the student to communicate effectively with diverse audiences both in a written and spoken format.

Required Textbook: Effective Communication for Colleges, 11th Edition; Brantley & Miller; South-Western/Thomson Learning, 2005.
Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:
¨ Identify the five elements of the communication cycle and the potential barriers and their influence.
¨ Name the three major components of the CBO approach.
¨ Revise messages to reflect the six Cs of effective communication.
¨ Plan, compose, and complete a message using the CBO approach.
¨ Identify Internet search techniques and conduct efficient searches.
¨ Explain when and how to use e-mail and various other means of communications effectively.
¨ Apply the CBO approach, the good news strategy and incorporate the six C’s of effective messages to write good news and neutral news messages.
¨ Apply the CBO approach, the bad news strategy and incorporate the six C’s of effective messages to write bad news messages.
¨ Implement the CBO approach, the persuasive strategy – AIDA, and incorporate the six C’s of effective messages to plan and complete persuasive messages.
¨ Identify and use a variety of sources, including the Internet, to research employment opportunities.
¨ Critique resume writing that accurately and effectively presents one’s qualifications.
¨ Critique cover letters.
¨ Use the CBO approach to create meaningful and ethical visuals.
¨ Use the CBO approach to prepare effective presentations.
¨ Use the CBO approach to develop clear, complete instructions.
General Education Goals Addressed in this Course:

You need to read your textbook chapters thoroughly, view PowerPoint Presentations through Course Content, check Assignments and the Course Calendar regularly, and post to the Discussion Board when assigned. Assignments, Discussions, and Assessments are not accepted late...no exceptions.

Evaluation of Students: Examinations 50%
All exams are T/F and Multiple Choice and will be taken online within the designated timeframe.
Assignments 25%
Each chapter will contain one or two assignments. You will submit all assignments through the Assignments link. You will write in proper English grammar....Instant Messaging format of writing will not be acceptable. Late assignments will not be accepted...No Exceptions. Your case studies will be assessed according to the guidelines within the Grading Rubric and Grading Criteria in Course Information. For optimum success in this online course, stay closely tuned to the Course Calendar.
Discussion Board Postings 25%
Each chapter will contain one discussion topic contained within the Discussion Board. You are required to read all of the postings and respond in a well thought out, substantive manner to my initial posting and to two of your classmates’ postings by the Calendar due date. Instant Messaging format of writing will not be acceptable. Your discussion board postings will not be graded...you will receive credit upon completion of the required postings. Late postings will not be accepted...No Exceptions. Stay closely tuned to the Course Calendar.

Computer Laboratories are available in the following areas:

¨ Media Center/Library – 2nd Floor
There is tutoring available (a) in the Writing Lab for all subject areas, not just English courses, and (b) in the Mathematics Tutoring Center. In addition, Student Success Seminars are scheduled each week and are posted on the college website under “Campus Resources and Services.”
