Course Title: BUSN 131-DL (Introduction to Business Administration - Distance Learning)
Course Description: A thorough survey of the activities that make up the field of business. Emphasis is placed on such topics as ownership management, international commerce, organization, purchasing, marketing, production, personnel, finance, and government regulations. Industry’s societal responsibilities relating to pollution, minorities and ethical practices are also explored.

Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives:
· Define business and identify potential risks and rewards.
· Describe the two types of economic systems.
· Identify the ways to measure economic performance.
· Outline the types of competition.
· Understand what is meant by business ethics and the factors that affect the level of ethical behavior in organizations.
· Explain the two views on social responsibility of business and understand the arguments for and against increased social responsibility.
· Explain the economic basis for international business and the restrictions nations place on international trade.
· Identify the institutions that enhance international business.
· Define and explain the meaning of e-business – the growth, the opportunities, and challenges.
· Describe the advantages and disadvantages of sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations.
· Define a small business, the people that start a small business, and assess the contributions that small business makes to the economy.
· Describe management and the four basic functions.
· Identify key management skills and different types of leadership.
· Describe Total Quality Management and its benefit to organizational effectiveness.
· Describe the use of technology and business application software as a means to organize, communicate, and make decisions.
· Explain how managers evaluate the financial health of a business and the importance of accounting information.
· Identify the functions of securities markets.
· Compare and contrast the differences among debt financing and equity financing.
· Describe the various stock exchanges where securities are traded.
· Describe how the Federal Reserve controls the money supply.
· Classify the various institutions in the U.S. banking system.
· Evaluate the role and importance of international banking and the role of the World Bank.
· Describe the six steps of learning to control your assets.
· Explain ways to build a financial base and outline a strategy for retirement.
Academic Achievement: Final grade will be based on the following:
Examinations (6): 60%
Assignments and participation: 15%
Term Paper 25%
The tests will be given on-line and include multiple-choice questions, approximately 15 from each chapter.
An additional requirement included in your course work:
§ A business-related research paper (i.e., 4-5 pages) utilizing at least three sources will also be required. The subject, including a brief synopsis, must be submitted for approval. The paper is due no later than the last week of the semester.
Grading Scale:
A = 90%+ Excellent
B+ = 85 to 89% Very Good
B = 80-84% Good
C+ = 75 to 79% Above Average
C = 70 to 74% Average
D = 60-69% Passing-Below Average
F = 59 and below Failure
