From the Publisher: The newly revised Access to Health, Tenth Edition features a new student friendly design, thorough content updates with increased coverage of topics relevant to college students. Long known for its currency, research, and strength in behavior change for personal health students, the Tenth Edition provides a consistent framework for motivating students to make healthy life choices. The revised edition’s updated coverage includes a revised fitness chapter with greater focus on daily physical activity, updated nutrition chapter using the 2005 dietary guidelines, and increased information on coping with stress. Hot topics include the latest on fad-diets, sleep, and the role spirituality plays in our lives. Many of the textbook topics will empower students to make better health choices not just while enrolled in the course but in their future lives.

We will cover chapters 1 - 17 excluding chapter 6 during this semester.

Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives:

1. To provide students with the tools necessary to change their health behaviors.

2. To increase the awareness of the importance of developing healthful habits now and encourage students to become active managers of their own health care.

3. To provide the latest research and strategies needed to prevent disease and promote wellness.

4. To promote an understanding of and respect for the health related differences associated with our ethnic, cultural backgrounds, gender and age.

5. To encourage critical thinking so the student may sort the well-researched health material from the faddish.

General Education Goals Addressed in the Course:

To develop the ability to solve problems by collecting, organizing, and evaluating information. To develop an understanding and appreciation of diversity among cultures, including respect for various ways of viewing the world. To develop global perspective on problems and issues that humankind faces, and to explore solutions which are morally, socially, economically, politically and ecologically sound. To develop the understanding of health and well being necessary to confront the challenges facing individuals, families and communities.

Attendance policy

You must access the course web site at least once a week. Effective Fall Semester, 2008, a new OCC course withdrawal policy takes effect. A student may withdraw or be withdrawn from a course with the instructor assigning a grade of "W" and providing last date of attendance, up until a specified date. This date changes every semester. If a student stops attending or is administratively withdrawn after this date, an "F" will be assigned. The Add/Drop/Withdrawal Form can be obtained from the Registration and Records Office on the first floor of the Administration Building. Inappropriate comments will not be tolerated. Be considerate and respectful in your responses to your fellow students. Discussion postings are for public discussion only - it is not the place for personal commentary.

The discussion area of the course is the ideal place to ask questions so all students can benefit from the response. All personal matters (i.e. grading, absences etc.) are to be discussed with the instructor through private email, phone conversation or in person.

Evaluation of Student

1. There are sixteen self grading short-answer exams in the exam section of the course. The exams are open book and you may take the exams as many times as you wish. Only the highest grade is recorded. In order to receive credit for the exam, you must achieve at least a 90% correct. There is no reason that you cannot get a 100% on each exam since you can take it over and over again with an open book.

2. There are fourteen (14) Assignments/Discussions scheduled on the course web site, they should be posted to the discussion area of the course. This includes the Introduction, which is also worth 100 points. Module 5, Chapers 11 - 14 are combined into one discussion that requires a 2 page paper with 10 references. The theme for this writing assignment is addiction. See below for more information on this discussion.

3. Participation in discussion on the course web site. This is in addition to the postings required by the required assignments. You must read the posts of all students in the class and occasionally add your thoughts or share relevant materials which add and enrich the class discussion. This can be done by clicking on the reply button and adding your post to the discussion. Also considered in this portion of your grade is quality of your responses to other students and the amount of time you spend on the course in comparison to your fellow classmates. Brief comments like "great job" or way to go" will not be considered participation.

4. Chapter's 11 - 14 discussion will require you to research an addiction of interest. You may use the addictions in the textbook or any additional addiction you have interest in learning more about. Other addictions could include but are not limited to cell phones, teeth whittening, tatooing, cosmetic surgery, shoplifting, prescription drugs, and cutting. If you are not sure if your choice is appropriate, don't hesitate to email with your thoughts. This 2 page (approximately 600 - 750 words) writing assignment should be written in APA format and submitted in the discussion area of the course, as an attachment. More information on this paper will be forth coming.
