Catalog Description:

The course will emphasize a hands-on project oriented approach to problem solving.  The student will be using the microcomputer in a Windows environment with a modern integrated office software package (MicrosoftÔ Office).  Students may not receive credit for both CSIT123 and CSIT125.  Working knowledge of MicrosoftÔ Windows suggested.

  • Macromedia® FlashÔ Player 7 (free download)
  • Internet Exployer 6.0 or higher (can be downloaded)
  • Internet access (high speed broadband, T1 or ISDN recommended; 56K minimum connection required). Persistent connection required.

Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives:

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
  1. Describe and illustrate the hardware and software requirements for Integrated Office Software.
  2. Recognize and use various Windows features (menus, title bars, dialog boxes, cascading menus, dragging and dropping, pop-up menus, icons, taskbar and toolbars).
  3. Use Windows to save and retrieve files, maintain directories and run Office Software.
  4. Describe file management, word processing, spreadsheet and charting concepts.
  5. Identify an application using database, graphics, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.
  6. Create and edit documents.
  7. Format documents with appropriate use of fonts and type styles to improve the appearance of a document.
  8. Import graphics and use tables in a document.
  9. Work with multiple documents transferring data between documents.
  10. Automate work by use of macros and templates.
  11. Produce a professional looking document project utilizing the word processing techniques presented.
  12. Create, edit and format a spreadsheet.
  13. Use functions in a spreadsheet.
  14. Work with multiple spreadsheets.
  15. Use charts and graphs in a spreadsheet.
  16. Produce a professional looking spreadsheet project utilizing the spreadsheet techniques presented.
  17. Integrate the document and spreadsheet projects.
  18. Create, maintain, and query a database management system.
  19. Create and use database forms.
  20. Create database reports.
  21. Produce a database project utilizing the database techniques presented.
  22. Create compound documents containing text, graphics, database, and spreadsheet data.

Course Standards:

  • Assignments submitted after the scheduled deadline will drop a letter grade for lateness.
  • Students may resubmit assignments, but not for full credit.
  • All chapter assignment drop boxes will be locked after each application test.
  • Forums will be locked after the scheduled deadline and can not be made up.
  • Tests will be locked after the scheduled deadline and can only be made up based on extenuating circumstances, which will be evaluated on a case by case situation.
 

Attendance Policy:

The student must access the course web site at least once every week and submit the required assignments.  If the student has missed more than a 1.5 weeks (10%) or has not submitted the assignments, the student will be denied access to the course.  The student will be dropped from the course after the second week with a grade of "W" if it is prior to mid-semester unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.

Evaluation of Student:

  1. Detailed list of assignments listed on the course website.  All assignments must be uploaded to the appropriate Assignment Drop Box on the Course Website to be evaluated.


  2. Online tests scheduled on the course website:
    • 1 Objective Test on Introductory Chapters
    • 1 Objective Test and Skills Assessment Test (SAM) on Word
    • 3 Objective or Skills Assessment Tests on Excel, Access, PowerPoint.  Student chooses the test methodology that bests suits their learning style.
    • 2 (Word and Excel) Hands-on Application Tests

  3. Participation in 3 Discussions (Word, Excel and Access) scheduled on the course website.
