Sharon's Story
My name is Sharon. I am married with two children, a boy, 17 and a girl, 7. I work almost full time hours at a local hospital in the laboratory. I am a Medical Laboratory Technician and completed the MLT course at Ocean County College almost 14 years ago. I love the challenges of working in the lab, but I felt that I was not reaching my full potential in helping people. No longer am I able to help out behind the scenes. I want to be right there on the front line.
Its been about 6 years now that I have decided I wanted to go into nursing. I had all of my prerequites from the MLT program but I guess I was chicken on knowing I had to devote a full 2 years again. Also, I have a son with Aspergers Syndrome and these kids need constant attention and monitoring. You never know what they are going to do or when they are going to "freak out". I never thought I would have the mind frame to devote to the program. It was a year when Brian seemed to be controlable with the medications. He still has his "days" but its not so bad.
So last June I decided I was going to go for the nursing program. A dream I have wanted for a long time. Thoughts like how am I going to do this. Working, going to school, and doing the reading and studying. After talking with Dr. Jim Brown, the dean, I tried for the One Day per Week Nursing Program. And much to my amazement, I was accepted. I am in my first year of the nursing program. It is hard, it is time consuming, and yes I devote a major portion of my time to it. But, I know I would not be able to do it if I had to go to a classroom every day.
I am available to my family if they need me. The school can get in contact with me when my son is acting up. Today was a perfect example. I am studying and here is the call from the school. Brian is acting up again. Come and get him, we cant have him here.
Doing the course on line is really the best way to learn if you are self motivated. I encourage anyone who has family and job responsibilites to go for the online nursing program. I really think this program opens up the way for more people to get into the nursing field that normally could not to it, because of life responsibilites.
