Virtual
Laboratory
The
Nursing Skills Labs are located in the
Health Science Building at the Ocean County College
campus in Toms River and comprise Rooms 106,115/116,
117 and 118. Inside these rooms you will find an array
of state-of-the-art equipment to assist you in practicing
and learning essential skills. These labs offer a
supportive and trustful climate where nursing students
can explore what their learning needs are. Students
are encouraged set goals for themselves and evaluate
their progress. This is done under the guidance of
the Lab staff who are registered nurses and are
available to assist you and answer your questions.
Lab Schedules are updated weekly: for open
and practice
labs.
Let's take
a tour
of what the labs have to offer:
 We'll
start in
the Computer
Lab,
Room 106.
Here we have 11 stations with Gateway 'e' series desktops
that use Windows xp. Each station has the latest interactive
nursing programs available for your use. These programs
will assist you as you progress through the Nursing
Program. They can be used for enrichment or may be
assigned by the faculty. You will also find programs
from your textbooks to assist with your studies. Dosage
calculation programs are available
as well as NCLEX-RN practice
exams. The Internet is
accessible and a printer
enables you to print out
your research or your progress
in a particular program. We
encourage you to use all
that this lab has to make
your learning an exciting
experience. |
 Next,
let's go
to the Classroom
Lab,
Room 115/116.
This is
a large
room where
most of
your lab
classes
will take
place.
There are
five patient
care stations
that simulate
the hospital
environment.
These stations
allow the
student
nurse to
gain experience
and establish
a comfort
level before
entering
the hospital
for the
first time.
The stations
are also
where senior
students
can continue
to hone
their skills,
become
more proficient, and practice
critical
thinking
skills
with scenarios
set up
for that
purpose. Here
we have
the
latest
videos
that
enable
nursing
students
to view
a variety
of procedures,
watch
patient interviews and scenarios or learn about new developments in Nursing. Many videos are assigned for students to watch in preparation for class or lab. There are 10 stations with headphones so students can prepare and study in quiet. Students may also choose to watch videos in a group and may take the videos to anunoccupied classroom, which are equipped with mounted VCR's and monitors.

Our
next stop
is the Practice
Lab,
Room
117.
This
lab is
also
a large
room
with
four
patient
care
areas
identical
to those
in the
Classroom
Lab.
We also
have
an area
devoted
to Maternal-Child
nursing.
We even
have
a mannequin
here that
will
provide
the
student
with
a complete
birthing
experience
before,
during,
and
after
delivery.
Our
pediatric
and
infant
mannequins
provide
the
students
with
the same
high
tech
simulations
as our
adult
mannequins
helping
to master
auscultation
and
assessment
skills.
This
room
is
generally
used
for
practice
and
provides
a nurturing,
student-friendly
environment.
Students
feel
comfortable
here critiquing
each
other
and
can
readily
find
the
assistance
of
the
lab
personnel
if
needed.
The Practice Lab frequently undergoes reconfigurations
over the course of the semester as the needs of the
students change. We can set up a practice Nurse's Station
with a free standing computer to simulate what the
students will encounter when they access the computer
systems at the hospitals. This enables the students
to practice documentation skills and work on the Nursing
Process and concept maps. We also have an area set
aside for medication administration and dosage calculation.
Both the Classroom Lab and the Practice Lab have a
variety of simulators and charts that also enhance
learning. These include injection administration hip
simulators, catheterization simulator, wound care models,
vascular access simulators and anatomical models that
can easily be moved between the labs or into a classroom.
Wound assessment and care, medication administration, tracheostomy care, suctioning, nasogastric tube care and removal, central venous line care and management, ostomy care, and chest tube management are just some of the skills that students can learn and practice with the mannequins. This lab is available to use for practice when a class is not scheduled.

Our
last stop
is the SimMan Lab ,
Room
118.
This
room
is located
behind
the
Practice
Lab
and is
accessible
from
there
or through
the
Classroom
Lab.
Two human patient simulator mannequins and computer equipment provide patient care clinical experiences. The
mannequins
are high
tech and
are designed
for simulation
and practice
of a complete
range of
patient assessment
and care
procedures.
The students
can actually
listen to
heart, breath,
and bowel
sounds and
then interpret their findings. Each mannequin also has a blood pressure arm enabling the student to practice taking blood pressures and palpating pulses. The sounds can be altered to simulate whatever the scenario calls for and helps the student assess and recognize changes in a patients' condition.

The
Labs offer opportunities
for the student
nurse to practice
critical thinking
skills through
scenarios and the
variety of computer
and video programs
available to them.
The atmosphere
of the lab allows
for students to
learn in their
own way and at
their own pace.
The Lab Personnel
encourages the
students to review
their progress,
self-correct their
mistakes where
appropriate, and
problem solve creatively.
