As
part of this year's theme for the National Public
Health Week "Designing Healthy Communities,"
the faculty of the Health and Human Performance Program
urge the entire college community to take "A
Walk to Health." Walking is the one exercise
that is safe enough for people of any age or medical
condition to try. It needs no special equipment and
you don't even have to set any time aside for it.
Many nature trails surround our own OCC campus and
it is a perfect place to begin "A
Walk to Health."
Walking
is something you can do at any time. It is a great
cardiovascular exercise and is often recommended by
doctors because of its simplicity, low risk of injury,
and adaptability to busy schedules. It is particularly
handy for people who don't particularly like jogging
or running. A brisk walk helps burn the same amount
of calories that jogging does. Walking is a great
sport because you can include friends, family and
pets or just do it by yourself. There are benefits
to having a walking partner, one of the best being
motivation.
Consider taking a walk at lunchtime. You can cover two miles easily and have time to sit and eat your lunch observing the rare and unique beauty of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. You can pretend its your own secret garden and give your mind and body a chance to refresh in the middle of the day.
