Welcome! The Department of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Media Studies is a rich and varied academic department that you will encounter throughout your academic life at Ocean County College.
The OCC online catalog will inform you of the specific requirements for your degree program. Some of our most popular career choices are included under the umbrella of:
Communication and Communication Technologies, which prepare students for transfer to four year programs or for entry level positions in advertising agencies, design and photography studios, corporate art departments, printing firms, retail businesses, television and radio production facilities, computer graphics, television and radio production technologies, and print and broadcast and internet journalism.
The Interpreter Training Certificate Program is a thirty-six credit program that prepares students to interpret using American Sign Language in a variety of educational, business, cultural, and social settings.
The AAS degree in Interpreting is designed to prepare students with American Sign Language skills, an understanding of Deaf culture, knowledge of the interpreter's role and responsibility, theoretical skills in interpreting, and practical experience in interactive settings. Various settings in which the interpreter works are examined in addition to ethical decision making in relation to the role of the interpreter. Students enrolling in this program learn how to interpret English into American Sign Language as well as American Sign Language into English.
In addition, students can prepare for transfer to a four year school by taking a Liberal Arts program and electing various Humanities, Fine Arts, and Media Studies courses to prepare for a four year major or for eventual graduate study. Catalogs for four-year colleges should be consulted to guide course selection.
