CHEM 180 Introductory Chemistry Online

Introductory Chemistry OnlineOcean County College is the first community college in the Northeastern United States to develop a college level introductory chemistry course and place it totally online with both content and laboratory being directed via distance learning. OCC has teamed up with LabPaq and Wiley Higher Education to deliver the entire course through WebCT.

Students must purchase lab kit


Independent Laboratory Exercises Laboratory Manual and Lab Kit: available through LabPaq, Denver Colorado. LabPaq

Approximate cost for kit – $160

Students should purchase the laboratory kit at least two weeks before the semester begins, and the kit is available (rush delivery is an option) from the above web link.

CHEM 180 Introductory Chemistry

A one-semester laboratory course designed for those who have not had a high-school science background or for those who have graduated from high school ten or more years ago. This course may be especially useful for those students preparing to enter the para-medical training programs or those wishing to prepare for college chemistry. The following are covered in this course: measurement, matter and energy, elements and compounds, atomic structure, periodic law, nomenclature, equation-writing, ichiometrics, pneumatics, solutions, acids, bases, salts, and oxidation-reduction. High school algebra or MATH 011 recommended.

This course is a wonderful choice for those interested in entering the One Day per Week Nursing Program who have not had high school chemistry or who took it many years ago.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and Fees are based on 4 semester hours and a $100 DL fee.

Safety

The At-Home Science kits are safe, cost-effective and environment-friendly. The kits include a lab manual plus the basic equipment and supplies required to complete the full semester of lab assignments described in each manual. Students need to carefully follow the safety guidelines provided.


Who should take this course online?



Student with laptop computer

  • Students who work full time and find it difficult to attend classes face-to-face because of time contraints.
  • You must be an excellent student who is comfortable with computers.
  • You should be a self starter and good at following directions.
  • You should have excellent reading comprehension skills. Students who are in developmental courses should not take this course online.
  • High school juniors and seniors wishing to get a jump start on taking college courses.
