NJ STARS Program

Established in 2004, New Jersey Student Tuition Assistance Reward Scholarship Program (NJ STARS) is a state scholarship that covers up to five (5) semesters of tuition and approved fees at your local community college.

New Jersey Student Tuition Assistance Reward Scholarship Program II (NJ STARS II) is a state scholarship for graduates of community colleges who participated in NJ STARS and graduated with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. NJ STARS II is a state scholarship program in which a student could receive free tuition at any New Jersey state college or university.

Who is Eligible?

New Jersey high school graduates in the top 20% of their graduating class from the year 2004 and later.

How to apply?

Financial Aid Deadlines

  • New Students Beginning in the Fall semester = October 1
  • New Students Beginning in the Spring semester = March 1
  • Returning Students = June 1

(Please note these are the State Deadlines. To insure all processing and funding is in place prior to registering for classes, Ocean County College suggests you complete all appropriate financial aid documents three months before the State Deadline.)

Information and Guidelines

  • Students must apply for all other available forms of state and federal financial aid (exclusive of loans and private funding) by completing a FAFSA.
  • NJ STARS shall not exceed cost of attendance at an institution when combined with all other forms of financial aid.
  • Qualifying students are eligible to receive up to 5 semesters of tuition (minimum of 12 credits per term, excluding summer; no more than 3 credits of developmental courses) and approved fees free of charge up to 15 credits a semester.
  • Applicant must be a NJ state resident.
  • Students must have attended at least a full senior year, and graduated from a New Jersey high school in the top 20% of the graduating 2004 through 2006 classes.
  • Participants in the program must have graduated from high school after 2004 and not earlier than 2 calendar years before scholarship payments commence.
  • Students must enroll full-time in an associate degree-seeking program.
  • To continue the scholarship in the sophomore year, the student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Students who's grade point average drops below a 3.0 after their first semester will be required to take part in an Enrichment Program, which is a class titled ACAD 155 "Student Success" at Ocean County College.
  • Consecutive full-time enrollment is required once awarded.
  • If student is dismissed for academic or disciplinary reasons, the student is no longer eligible for a scholarship under this program and must repay in full all amounts received under this program.

This information session is open to parents, students, and anyone interested in learning more about NJ STARS, a scholarship for high school students in the top 20% of their class.
