Technology General Education Requirement
Test-Out Option

Effective September 2009, the State of New Jersey has mandated that all NJ community college students enrolled in AA and AS degree programs will be required to satisfy a Technology General Education Requirement by taking a computer technology skills/information literacy course or by demonstrating competency through a test-out option.

Students planning to take the test-out option should make an appointment to take the test in the Testing Center 732.255.0401. The minimum passing score is 70%. The test will be scored automatically, and students will know immediately if they have passed. The proctoring fee for the test is $40. Several texts have been placed on reserve in the Library for students who would like advance preparation.

Please be advised that students are entitled to only one attempt at the test-out.

College Placement Test: Accuplacer
The College tests incoming students in reading, writing and mathematics skills. The results of these tests have no effect on admission to Ocean County College; their purpose is to help the college place students in courses appropriate to their backgrounds and needs.

After students are accepted by the college, they can call or stop in at the College Testing Center to schedule an appointment to take the College Placement Test.  The test is also offered on a walk-in basis; no appointment necessary when computers are available.  The test should be taken as soon as possible, since a delay in testing will result in a delay in the scheduling of courses. Also, early testing will enable students to make up any skill deficiencies during the summer session.

College Placement Test:  Exemptions
You can be exempt from taking the placement test if you have the following scores:

PSAT: 54+ Critical Reading and/or  53+ Math
SAT: 540+ Critical Reading and/or 530+ Math
ACT:  23+ English/Writing and/or 22+ Math
HSPA:  235+ Language Arts & Literacy and/or 250+ Math
Receive transfer credit for college level Math and/or English based upon submission and evaluation of transcripts by Advising and/or The Testing Center, followed-up by official transcripts (sent directly to the college from your previous school) to the Registration and Records Office of OCC.
