Important Update About NJ STARS

The NJ Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) is pleased to share some important news with you regarding NJ STARS Program benefits that will be available to eligible June 2010 high school graduates during the 2010-2011 academic year.

A technical correction was recently made to the FY 2011 Appropriations Act to clarify that NJ STARS awards for 2010 high school graduates will cover tuition only. As you know, NJ STARS students who enroll full-time in a degree program at their home county college may receive payment for up to18 college-level credits for up to five semesters. The amount of the NJ STARS award will continue to be determined after all other State and federal grants and scholarships are applied to tuition charges.

We would like to emphasize that the only aspect of the program that has changed for 2010 high school graduates is that awards will be based on tuition only, less all other State and federal grants and scholarships. It is also important to note that NJ STARS who graduated from high school prior to 2010 will continue to receive awards based on tuition and approved fees.

Those students who are: 1) June 2010 high school graduates 2) will begin Ocean County College under the NJ STARS scholarship, and 3) have already registered for classes will receive an awards letter by or around August 16th stating how much the STARS scholarship will cover. Students will then have until September 21st to make payment for the balance due.
