Grade Point Average (GPA):
A system for evaluating the overall scholastic performance of students. Grades
are often measured on a four-point scale in which an "A" equals
four points and a "B" equals three points, etc. These are called
grade points. Total points are found by multiplying the number of credits
for a course by the student's grade point. A student's GPA is found by dividing
the sum of grade points by the number of course credits.
Academic Advisor:
A person at OCC who helps a student decide what classes to take,
when to take them, how many credits to take, what major to pursue, etc.
Academic Probation:
Academic status of students whose GPA falls below a 2.0 or “C” average.
Academic Progress:
The academic sanctions for failing to maintain satisfactory standards/progress
may include probation, special probation, academic restriction, and suspension.
These sanctions will be imposed on students who either fail to earn sufficient
grade point or who continue to withdraw excessively from classes.
Academic Standards:
Standards, such as a certain grade point average, that students must maintain
in order to remain in good standing with the college.
Academic Success:
Your achievement is at least average and your performance/progress meets college
regulations and standards.
Academic Suspension: or Dismissal:
Students can be suspended or dismissed for consistent poor academic performance.
Academic Standing:
In order to remain in good standing and become eligible for graduation, the student
must maintain a “C” average or 2.0 GPA. If a student receives two
academic restrictions, not necessarily in succession, a one-year suspension may
be imposed during which no credit courses may be taken.
