1. Choosing Your
Degree

3. Selecting the
Right Courses
3. Selecting the Right Courses
Now that I know the different types of degrees and
certificates OCC offers, how do I select the program
that is right for me?
When it comes to selecting a degree program, first time students
are in one of three categories. They are either certain, exploring options, or are undecided about a degree program. Look at the following
categories and decide which you are in and then follow
the suggestions included.
Are you certain?
Planning your classes is a straightforward task if
you have already selected your degree program. For each
program, OCC has designed a curriculum guide listing all
of the classes that need to be taken to complete the
degree or certificate. Students that are certain
about their degree need to complete a two step process.
- First, complete any Developmental Skill course/s
you may be required to take as a result of your English
and Mathematics placement
test results. These courses are designed to bring your skills up to college level.
- Second, once you have completed any Developmental
Skills requirements, meet with an Academic
Advisor, review the appropriate curriculum guide identifying
the classes required, create an educational plan for
the next several semesters and follow that plan to
completion. Students interested in transferring should
also check out NJ Transfer early in their career with OCC.
Are you exploring?
For most entering freshmen the certain educational
planning track is too difficult. They are exploring
rather than certain. For these students, planning
the classes they need to take will be a little more
complicated. If you are an exploring student, you need
to follow a three-step process.
- First, complete any Developmental Skill course/s
you may be required to take as a result of your English
and Mathematics placement
test results. These courses are designed to bring your skills up to college level.
- Second, once any required Developmental Skills courses
are completed, begin to take the General
Education Requirements.
Nearly all of the certificate and degree programs
at OCC require students to complete the General Education
Requirements. Full-time students should meet with
their assigned advisor. Part-time student can meet
with an advisor in the Academic Advising Center to
get help with course selection.
- Third, completing the Developmental Skills courses
and the General Education requirements will allow
you time to sample classes from many academic areas and examine
your personal interests and capabilities.
Exploring students should have selected their degree program
by the time they have completed any required Developmental
Skills courses and half of the General Education requirements.
You need to become certain about your major by this
time, otherwise you may begin to select classes that
may not be required for your eventual degree.
Are you undecided?
For students who are completely undecided about their
degree program, the educational planning process will be longer
and less certain. Recommended steps for undecided students
begin with completion of any required Developmental
Skills course/s you may need to take as a result of your
placement test results. After completing any required
Developmental Skills courses, undecided students should
seek assistance from an Academic Advisor or the OCC Career Center.
