Patient Care Technician

With hospitals streamlining their health care delivery system, the Patient Care Technician has become an essential and visible member of the health care team.  The PCT must be competent in patient testing procedures and appropriately care for the needs of patients while working with a health care team.  The PCT is responsible for procedures including:

  • phlebotomy
  • electrocardiography
  • patient comfort activities
  • ambulation
  • assessment of vital signs
Students are expected to meet the following requirements prior to clinical practice.
  • Attend a minimum of 80% of classroom lectures and lab practices sessions.
  • Show proof of current professional liability insurance.
  • Comply with current OSHA regulations at all times during laboratory and clinical practice.
  • Show valid documentation of a complete physical examination including urinalysis and complete blood count results.
  • Show valid documentation of initiation of the Hepatitis B vaccination series.
  • Show valid documentation of full MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) immunization status.
  • Show valid documentation of a negative Mantoux (Tuberculosis) test or a negative chest x-ray with a positive Mantoux test.
  • Show valid documentation of a Varicella (Chicken Pox) titer to demonstrate immunity status; immunization is not required.
  • Accept responsibility for any and all medical expenses incurred during the program.

Upon successful completion of this course, students meeting eligibility requirements may apply to take the phlebotomy technician certification examination offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the PCT certification examination offered by the National Center for Competency Testing.
