Phlebotomy Technician

Working directly with patients, the phlebotomy technician is depended upon to collect quality blood samples from the patient to produce quality laboratory results.  To do this, the phlebotomy technician must be competent in drawing blood specimens safely and reliably, must work well under pressure, and be able to communicate effectively. Upon successful completion of this program, students may apply to take the examination offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists to become a certified phlebotomy technician.  Course topics include:

  • anatomy and physiology
  • blood collection procedures and equipment
  • interpersonal relations
  • difficult blood draws
Students are expected to meet the following requirements prior to clinical practice.
  • Attend a minimum of 80% of classroom lectures and lab practices sessions.
  • Show proof of current professional liability insurance.
  • Comply with current OSHA regulations at all times during laboratory and clinical practice.
  • Show valid documentation of a complete physical examination including urinalysis and complete blood count results.
  • Show valid documentation of initiation of the Hepatitis B vaccination series.
  • Show valid documentation of full MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) immunization status.
  • Show valid documentation of a negative Mantoux (Tuberculosis) test or a negative chest x-ray with a positive Mantoux test.
  • Show valid documentation of a Varicella (Chicken Pox) titer to demonstrate immunity status; immunization is not required.
  • Accept responsibility for any and all medical expenses incurred during the program.
