Goal

In support of implementing the Ocean County College Academic Master Plan, our goal will be that upon graduating, the OCC student will demonstrate the ability to identify, locate and appropriately use informational tools for research purposes.

Purpose

To establish an Information Literacy Program that will provide faculty members and students with tools, methods and interactive opportunities to develop competencies across the curriculum.

Introduction

In response to Guidelines for Information Literacy in the Curriculum published by Middle States Commission on Higher Education and in compliance with the strategy set forth in the OCC Academic Master Plan published 2004, the Library Committee proposes the following Information Literacy Program.

Information Literacy Defined

We expect OCC students to become effective lifelong learners encompassing the following during their first year college experience:

  1. To know how knowledge is organized
  2. To know how to find information in print and non-print resources
  3. To be able to evaluate and use information
  4. To be able to assimilate and effectively communicate (both verbally and in writing) this information

Strategy

  1. Formal and informal discussions at college and department meetings

    1. Library committee
    2. Dean's meeting
    3. Departmental meetings
    4. Information Literacy Colloquium
  2. Form ILP Implementation Committee with representation from key stakeholders:
    1. English Department
    2. Social Sciences Department
    3. Nursing Department
    4. Vice President of Academic Affairs Representative
    5. Science Department
    6. Humanities Department
    7. HHPE Department
  3. Submit program assessment guidelines to Outcomes Assessment Committee.
  4. Provide (1) workshops for faculty on creating Information Literacy research assignments and (2) workshops for new faculty hires.
  5. Create Online Research Tutorial Module

Implementation

  1. Collaborate with faculty to identify core research competencies considered important for all students to have in accessing and using information resources.
  2. Offer workshops on all locations to individual faculty and/or departments on electronic services.
  3. Create a pilot Across the Curriculum Information Literacy Program.
  4. Offer pilot program to selected faculty members and/or departments
  5. Implement assessment tools for measuring student learning, curricular innovation that supports information literacy and collaboration among the various involved constituencies.
  6. Offer continuing opportunities for faculty to convene and assess the ways in which developmental research skills are embedded in their courses.
