Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program:
Located at the end of Parking Lot 1, this is a USEPA-funded
program that, together with the State of New Jersey,
Ocean County, local municipalities, and non-governmental
organizations, helps restore, maintain, protect and
enhance the natural resources of the Barnegat Bay Estuary
and its contributing watershed. Congress established
the National Estuary Program in 1987 to promote comprehensive
planning, conservation, and management of nationally
significant estuaries threatened by pollution, development
or overuse, and to encourage the preparation of management
plans for those estuaries. The Barnegat
Bay National Estuary Program (BBNEP) was accepted
into the program in 1995. In May 2002, the plan was
approved by the United States Environmental Protection
Agency. The Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program is
one of only 28 estuary programs in the United States
and Puerto Rico that has been accepted into the program.
Staff members are available to work with student clubs.
They have a small library of environmental reference
materials, including journals, published studies, videos,
DVD’s, CD’s, and materials to provide educational
programs for children. All are available to loan to
faculty and students. The BBNEP works with a myriad
of government, non-governmental, non-profit and local
organizations and can be a resource for students to
get involved in many ways. There is also opportunity
for student internships.
