Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Sweep Region XIX Championships
Ocean County College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country each took home the team titles in the 2011 Division III Region XIX Cross Country Championships. The race took place under ideal fall conditions at Thompson Park in Lincroft, NJ on Saturday, October 22, 2011.
In the men’s race, Haroldas Subertas and Raymond Newman finished the race in second and third place with time of 28:17 and 28:27 respectively. Nico Spadavecchia finished in sixth place and Jason Huey in ninth with times of 29:51 and 30:07. Chris Keghlian rounded out the Viking scoring in twentieth place with a time of 31:26. The Ocean County Vikings edged out Gloucester County College by two points, 35 to 37, to take the 2011 Men's Division III Region XIX Championship. The team also earned the Garden State Athletic Conference title for their excellent performance.
Haroldas Subertas, Raymond Newman, and Nico Spadavecchia each earned first team All-Region honors at the race. Haroldas and Raymond were also named the the first team All-Garden State Athletic Conference. Nico Spadavecchia and Jason Huey were named to the second team All-Garden State Athletic Conference.
In the women’s race, freshmen Samantha and Amanda Farina led Ocean for the title sweep. Samantha Farina (20:21) crossed the tape a mere eight seconds before her sister, earning the individual title in Division III in her first year of intercollegiate competition. Sophomores Stephanie Paluchowski (20:45) and Jaclyn Rizzo-Cascio (23:06) were also top point-scorers, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Theresa Messano rounded out the Vikings scoring in eighth place with a time of 23:42. This is the Vikings third consecutive Region XIX title in women’s cross country. The team also finished as the runner-up in the Garden State Athletic Conference this season.
Samantha Farina, Amanda Farina, Stephanie Paluchowski, and Jaclyn Rizzo-Cascio were all named to the first team All-Region for their efforts in the race. Samantha, Amanda, and Stephanie also earned first team All-Garden State Athletic Conference honors.
Good luck to both teams as they prepare for the NJCAA National Championships hosted by Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts on Friday, November 4 and Saturday November 5, 2011.
