The Athletic Department of Ocean County College is proud to have our Women’s Basketball Team honored as the2010 - 2011 Region XIX Team Champions of Character recipient. This award recognizes a Region XIX Athletic Team for outstanding results in character development of its student athletes and coaches by embracing the true spirit of competition through the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. The recipients also demonstrate outstanding involvement in the community, which results in positive character development through sport.
The Ocean County College Women’s Basketball Team made an impact both on and off the court this 2010 – 2011 season. In the classroom, the team finished with a stellar 3.41 team GPA and has been selected the 5th place team in the country for the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year. Six of the eight players were named to the Academic All-Conference and All-Region teams for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 Semesters.
On the court, the team finished strong with 15 wins and 10 losses. The team members and coaching staff are to be commended for not receiving a technical foul all season. Erin Applegate and Elizabeth Lawler were named All-Region XIX and All-Garden State Athletic Conference. Elizabeth was also named NJCAA Player of the Week for the week of February 15, 2011. Liz ranked 9th in the country in scoring and 2nd in rebounding at the end of the season.
Off the court, the team spent time assisting the community as volunteers and fundraisers. The players all volunteered to work at the Sunny Side Care Facility Holiday Party. The team also took part in raising funds and securing donations for Kevin’s Kids for Christmas Drive 2010. During the months of January and February the team went “Pink” for Breast Cancer Awareness and had a special ceremony in the game against Middlesex.
During the halftime of the men’s basketball game vs. Atlantic Cape Community College, the Ocean County College Athletic Department honored the student-veterans of Ocean County. The teams escorted the Veterans to half court to be recognized. A small reception hosted by the Athletic Department Office Staff followed the ceremony.
The Ocean County College Women’s Basketball Program has clearly demonstrated a commitment to the ideals of the Champions of Character Award.
