Technology Requirement for AA and AS Degree Programs

woman on computerEffective September 2009, the State of New Jersey has mandated that all NJ community college students enrolled in AA and AS degree programs will be required to satisfy a Technology general education requirement by taking a computer technology skills/information literacy course or by demonstrating competency through a test-out option.

Most OCC programs already include a course that fulfills this requirement and are not affected by this change.  This new requirement affects only the following OCC programs:

  • AA in Liberal Arts (including the Honors Option)
  • AS in General Studies (including options/departmental concentrations in Humanities, Math, Science, Social Science, Health and Physical Education, Business, and Computer Science)
  • AS in Engineering
  • AS in Criminal Justice
  • AS in Environmental Science

If you are enrolled in one of the five programs indicated above, you must take a computer technology skills/information literacy course or successfully test out of the requirement.  All curriculum guides will now reflect this new requirement.  An updated guide, which supersedes all earlier versions, is available on WebAdvisor and at the following website: http://www.ocean.edu/campus/student_services/advising/degree_requirements.htm

Please print out a copy of your updated guide and remember that the new requirement is one you must satisfy for graduation.

A test-out option is available for the five programs listed above.  Information about this option is available at www.ocean.edu/admissions/testing.htm.

If you have questions or concerns about the new requirement, please contact the Academic Advising Office at 732.255.0400 x300.
