Outstanding Students Honored At OCC Awards Ceremony

Ocean County College presented 51 awards, totaling more than $63,650 to 77 outstanding students at its 50th Annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts, on the Ocean County College Main Campus, College Drive, Toms River, NJ.

The Awards Ceremony will be re-broadcast on Ocean TV 20 via Comcast of Toms River and Long Beach Island Channel 20 and Verizon FiOS of Northern Ocean County Channel 24 on Thursday, May 25 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 27 at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday, May 28 at 3:00 p.m.; and Monday, May 29 at 4:00 p.m. The ceremony will also be broadcast on the College’s website, www.ocean.edu, with video remaining available for online viewing for several weeks.

In addition to student awards, Ocean County College recognized three faculty members with the 2017 Teaching Excellence Award including:

  • Lynn Kenneally, Professor of Social Science (Full-time Faculty)
  • James Marshall, College Lecturer, Library (Professional Educator)
  • Charlotte Langeveld, Adjunct Associate Professor of Social Science (Adjunct)

The 2017 student awards recipients are:

RJ Norcia Graduating Award (Donated by Marilyn Kralik) – $100 is awarded to a graduating student who dramatically changed their academic pathway or worked to improve their GPA. Recipient: Avrohom Kotler (Lakewood)

OCC Adjunct Faculty Association Award (Donated by the Adjunct Faculty Association) – $250 is awarded to two graduating students, one in the field of History and one in the field of Business. Recipients: Ana Carrillo (Seaside Heights) and Corey Tyrrell (Barnegat)

Career, Employment, and Counseling Services Award (Donated by Career, Employment, and Counseling Services Department) – $200 is awarded to a graduating student who diligently worked on his/her career, academic, and life goals. Recipient: Dylann Emery (Forked River)

Viking Athletic Department Commitment Award – $100 and a plaque is awarded to two students who have shown outstanding commitment and support of the athletics program and loyalty to the College. Recipients: Robert Bennett (Oaklyn) and Robert Newman (Pine Beach)

The Commencement Speaker Award (Donated by Student Life) – $200 is awarded to the student Commencement Speaker. Recipient: Avrohom Kotler (Lakewood)

John Morrison Memorial Scholarship (Donated by Dr. Beth Brierley) – $250 is awarded to a graduating student transferring to a four-year institution who has been an active participant in OCC’s Performing Arts Programs. Recipient: Naess William (Toms River)

Meals On Wheels of Ocean County Award (In Honor of Virginia & Jack Lamping) – $250 is awarded to a graduating student interested in pursuing a career in public affairs, policy, or government. Recipient: Brandon Parolisi (Little Egg Harbor)

Probation Officer Harold E. Lasalle Memorial Award (Donated by Family & Friends) – $250 is awarded to a graduate of the Criminal Justice program pursuing a four-year degree in Criminal Justice. Recipient: Casey Astalos (Jackson)

Virginia & Jack Lamping Memorial Award (In Honor of Virginia & Jack Lamping) – $125 is awarded to a graduating student interested in pursuing a career in public affairs, policy, or government, or the arts. Recipient: Alice Woodruff (Forked River)

Delta Kappa Gamma-Zeta Chapter Teaching Scholarship – $300 is awarded to two female students from OCC continuing their education at a four-year institution in the field of Teacher Education. Recipient: Amanda Mendes and Bryanna Mendes (Manahawkin)

e-Learning Achievement Scholarship – $250 is awarded to a graduating e-Learning student who has excelled, as demonstrated by a GPA of 3.5 or higher, in the distance learning environment.  This scholarship is designed to recognize the unique skills and dedication required to succeed in an online learning modality. Recipient: Michael Santos (Barnegat)

Judith A. Laurie Memorial Award for Excellence in Spanish (Donated by Judith Laurie’s sister, Joan Herder) – $250 is awarded to a student demonstrating excellence in the pursuit of the Spanish language. Recipient: Ana Carrillo (Seaside Heights)

Phi Theta Kappa Heather Muser Memorial Alumni Award – $300 is awarded by the Alumni Association of Phi Theta Kappa of OCC to a member of Phi Theta Kappa who has made significant contributions to the programs and activities sponsored by the Tau Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Recipient: Abigal Orr (Manchester)

Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity Award$200 each is awarded to two students who best exemplify the ideals of the Phi Theta Kappa fraternity, making significant contributions to the work of the Tau Iota chapter, promoting intellectual and cultural growth. Recipients:  Alexandra Kern (Barnegat) and Oleksandr Podolyanchuk (Seaside Heights)

Associated Students of OCC Awards (In Memory of Thomas J. Brady) (Donated by Student Life) – Student Government presents $200 each to graduating students displaying consistently strong records of involvement in the co-curricular program. Recipients: Avrohom Kotler (Lakewood), C’airra Cotte and Kimberly Cacciato (Brick), Oleksandr Podolyanchuk (Seaside Heights), Rebecca Martucci (Forked River), and Autumn Shenko (Toms River)

Patrick Carroll Award$200 and a plaque is awarded to two male students who have excelled academically, whose influence have been most constructive in the field of Athletics, and have exhibited satisfactory scholarship, sound citizenship, and loyalty to the College. Recipients: Kieran Murphy (Toms River) and Thomas Pulcine (Hazlet)

Julie Foukarakis Memorial Award – $200 and a plaque is awarded to two female students who have excelled academically, whose influences have been most constructive in the field of Athletics, and have exhibited satisfactory scholarship, sound citizenship, and loyalty to the College. Recipients: Christina VanDerVliet (Brick) and Courtney Hagaman (Toms River)

Cornelia Wismer Memorial Award for Criminal Justice (Donated by Her Family) – $400 is awarded to an outstanding graduating student completing at least 64 OCC credits, with a 3.0 GPA or better, in the field of Criminal Justice. Recipient: Nicole Favato (Point Pleasant Beach)

Phi Theta Kappa Outstanding Service Award (Sponsored by Dr. & Mrs. William Rickert) – $500 is awarded to a student who has made outstanding contributions to the activities of Tau Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. The recipient must exemplify the ideals of Phi Theta Kappa as set forth in the four Hallmarks: Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Fellowship. Recipient: William Poser (Brick)

Dr. Albert Socol Memorial Scholarship Award$250 each is awarded to two outstanding students in Mathematics. Recipients: Brandon Johnson (Brick) and Tyler O’Grady (Barnegat)

James Inman Award$250 each is awarded to two students demonstrating outstanding qualities of scholarship, loyalty, citizenship, and contribution to extra-curricular activities. Recipients: Francis Bal (Jackson) and Melanie Fernandez (Toms River)

The Math Club Scholarship$250 each is awarded to two graduating students pursuing a degree in Mathematics at a four-year institution, with at least 12 completed, non-remedial, Mathematics credits with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipients: Nathaniel Burgdorfer (Toms River) and Matthew Johnson (Brick)                        

The Faculty Association of Ocean County College Award (Donated by the Faculty Association of OCC) – $400 each is awarded to two outstanding students transferring to four-year institutions. Recipients: Andrew Fantasia (Bayville) and Michael Lynch (Brick)

FAOCC William Kanouse Memorial Scholarship (In Honor of past-FAOCC President Bill Kanouse) (Donated by the Faculty Association of OCC) – $500 is awarded to an outstanding student transferring to a four-year institution. Recipient: Brandon Johnson (Brick)

Pauline S. Miller Award (History) (Donated by the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission) – A certificate and $500 is awarded to an outstanding student in the field of History. Recipient: Corey Reynolds (Toms River)

Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission Art Award (Donated by the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission) – A certificate and $500 is awarded to an outstanding student in the field of Art. Recipient: Oleksandr Podolyanchuk (Seaside Heights)

The Paul Family Scholarship (In Memory of Joyce Previte) – $525 is awarded to a student who demonstrates aptitude in the study of Nursing with the intent to pursue a career in Nursing. Recipient: Moshe Brody (Lakewood)

The Joyce Previte Memorial Scholarship – $500 is awarded to an outstanding graduate of the Nursing Program who has maintained a 3.0 GPA or better. Recipient: Zainab Razavi (Toms River)

Who’s Who Among Students at OCC – $100 each is awarded to graduating students nominated in 2017 for making significant contributions to Ocean County College regarding scholarship and leadership. Recipients: Francis Bal and Diana McEntee (Jackson); Robert Bennett (Oaklyn); Alyssa Brantley, Grace Evans, Melanie Fernandez, Kieran Murphy, Crystal Pierce, and Autumn Shenko (Toms River); Kimberly Cacciato, C’airra Cotte, Erin Matula, William Poser, and Jenna Puglisi, (Brick); Alicia Dalia (Point Pleasant);  Emily Dancisin and Daniel Moran (Little Egg Harbor); Avrohom Kotler and Gustavo Ortega (Lakewood); Rebecca Martucci (Forked River); Abigal Orr (Manchester), and Oleksandr Podolyanchuk (Seaside Heights)

Soroptomist Club of Toms River Award – $750 is awarded to a graduating female student continuing her education at a four-year institution. Recipient: Kassandra Wainwright (Beachwood)

The Viking Spirit Award – $800 is awarded to a graduating EOF student who exemplifies leadership, service, and character. Recipient: Kimberly Cacciato (Brick)

Andrew T. Baran Scholarship – $1,000 is awarded to a graduating student who enrolls in a four-year institution pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Recipient: Edward Landi (Jackson)

Carleen Sterling Orsi Memorial Award – $1,000 is awarded to a graduate student transferring to a four-year institution. Recipients: INITIAL – Nicole Dyson (Brick) and RENEWAL – April Szymczyk (Jackson)

Sheldon Linz Memorial Award (Donated by the Family of Jennifer Linz Cooper) – $1,000 is awarded to an outstanding photography student. Recipient: Remington Silvan (Jackson)

Donald W. Smith Scholarship (Donated by D.W. Smith Associates) – $500 each is awarded to two graduating students pursuing education in civil engineering, surveying, planning landscape design, and/or environmental services. Recipient: Nathaniel Burgdorfer (Toms River) and Michael Nicolas (Brick)

Ocean County Society of Professional Engineers Award – $1,000 is awarded to a student for outstanding achievement in Engineering. Recipient: Brandon Johnson (Brick)

Laverne Weigold Memorial Scholarship Award – $1,000 is awarded to an outstanding student demonstrating scholarship abilities and an interest in the area of English or the Humanities. Recipient: Autumn Shenko (Toms River)

Joseph J. Quattrock Memorial Scholarship – $1,000 is awarded to a graduating student continuing at a four-year institution, majoring in Business Administration, Computer Science, or a related curriculum, with a 3.5 GPA or better. Recipient: Jack Bartky (Brick)

Michael D. Vena Memorial MUAA Scholarship (Donated by the Municipal Utilities Authorities Association of Ocean County) – $1,000 is awarded to two graduates transferring to a four-year institution and majoring in Environmental Sciences or directly related fields. Recipient: Kirsten Holloway (West Creek) and Francis McDonnell (Toms River)

Ocean County Sheriff’s Foundation Scholarship (Donated by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Foundation) – $1,000 is awarded to a graduate of the Criminal Justice program pursuing a four-year degree in Criminal Justice who has demonstrated academic success and service to the community. Recipient: Alexandra Kern (Barnegat)

Douglas C. King Memorial – $1,000 is awarded to a graduate of the Criminal Justice program who is pursuing a four-year degree in Criminal Justice. Recipient: Shanna Biesterfeld (Jackson)

Honors by Contract Graduating Awards (Donated by the Ocean County College Foundation) $1,000 is awarded to the top graduating students who have completed the Honors by Contract program. Recipients: Ashley Baggatta (Barnegat), Nicole Dyson (Brick), Andrew Fantasia (Bayville), Brandon Goodwin (Toms River), Diana McEntee (Jackson), Lauren Philipp and Connor Wagner (Point Pleasant), Cassidy Quinn (New Egypt), Stephanie Russo (Lakewood)

Catherine Don Diego Scholarship for Excellence in Humanities (Funded by a generous donation from the estate of the late Catherine Don Diego, an English Professor who was hired in 2005 and died from ovarian cancer in late 2006) – $500 is awarded to two graduating students who have excelled in and are pursuing a major in Literature, Art, Music, or Theatre. Recipients: Leah Marie Fargo and Autumn Shenko (Toms River)

Support Staff Association of OCC Award (Donated by the Support Staff Association) – $500 is awarded to two graduating students who are a spouse or dependent of a Support Staff employee, and $200 each is awarded to five graduating students who have been in the College Work-Study Program. Recipients: Nicole Celebre, Melanie Fernandez, and Mackenzie Rivera (Toms River), Jenna Puglisi and Ian Templeton (Brick), Robert Bennett (Oaklyn), and Evan Gonnella (Bayville)

Robert J. Novins Scholarship for Continued Study – $2,000 is awarded to a graduating student continuing in a four-year institution, majoring in Political Science and Government Studies with a 3.0 GPA or better. Recipient: Matthew Haines (Brick)

The D’Onofrio Foundation Award – $2,000 each is awarded to two students who demonstrate aptitude in the study of Health/Medicine with the intent to pursue a career in a related field, with a 3.0 GPA or better. Recipient: Melissa Cooke (Manchester) and Jared Wolansky (Forked River)

William T. Hiering Scholarship$2,000 is awarded to an outstanding student who has completed 64 credits at OCC and maintained a 4.0 grade point average. Recipient: Tyler O’Grady (Barnegat)

Dollie & Harry David Sussna Scholarship (Donated by Dollie & Harry David Sussna) – Initial award is $1,500 each to two outstanding students transferring to four-year institutions. $2,000 is renewable upon re-enrollment. Recipients: INITIAL – Francis Bal (Jackson) and Kayla Burciar (Toms River); and RENEWAL – C’airra Cotte (Brick) and Danielle Marie Robleski (Toms River)

President’s Leadership Team Scholarship – $900 is awarded to two non-traditional students who have demonstrated commitment to successfully completing their academic requirements and persistence in managing demanding, outside responsibilities not experienced by traditional students, and will continue their education at a four-year institution. Recipients: Jack Bartky (Brick) and DaRon Brown (Toms River)

Ocean County College Board of Trustees Award (Donated by the OCC Board of Trustees) – $1,000 each is awarded to three graduating students who have achieved outstanding academic performance at OCC and who will continue their education in the Kean-Ocean program. Recipients: Emily Dancisin (Little Egg Harbor), Maegan Eager (Toms River), Noah Resnick (Jackson)

Philip G. Zitelli Scholarship In Leadership (Donated by Phil Zitelli, a member of the first graduating class of OCC, June 1968) – $5,000 is awarded to an outstanding graduating student leader continuing at a four-year institution with a 3.0 GPA or better. Recipient: Melanie Fernandez (Toms River)
