Clay Club (Ceramics)

The purpose of this organization is to further students’ interest and knowledge in contemporary/historical and technical approaches in the creative ceramic arts.
History Club
Advisor: Robert Marchie
The OCC History Club is one of the more active clubs on campus. Membership is on a “rolling admissions” basis in that if students are interested in attending a particular lecture or discussion, they can show up and they are automatically enrolled. Communication with active members is through Ocean Connect e-mail. Communication depicting upcoming events is handled through campus-wide postings and a club bulletin board on the second floor of the Instructional Building. Students in the Honors History program help coordinate these postings.
The club hosts guest speakers monthly. We have enjoyed the presence of Holocaust survivors, Pearl Harbor & WWII veterans, a member of the famed Tuskeegee Airmen, the historian of the township of Toms River, the curator of the Naval Lakehurst Airship Museum and even local authors.
The club travels to area historical sites as well. A yearly trip to the Gettysburg National Military Park is always popular, but the club has travelled to see the Battleship New Jersey and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology. This spring the club plans a trip to the Eastern Penitentiary in Philadelphia.
The OCC History Club recently expanded its activities to include a monthly World War II Book Discussion Group that has proved to be popular. Books discussed have included Stephen Ambrose’s Citizen Soldiers and Rick Atkinson’s Day of Battle.
The club is considering expanding in the Fall to include a monthly “Historical Films” series. A classic movie or acclaimed documentary would be show to interested faculty and students, followed by a discussion of the film’s content and historical accuracy.
The aims of the OCC History Club are simple: enrichment for students and faculty who have a passion for the study of History and availability for professors who may wish to send their classes for to our programs for student credit and enrichment.
Meeting with Art
This club serves as a vehicle for dissemination of information, understanding, and enlightenment, discussion, appreciation, and practice of art. All forms of art and their approaches are explored through visual presentations, guest speakers, and both on- and off-campus exhibits.
Philosophy Club
This club has been organized to discuss current events from a philosophical and contemporary point of view and to arrive at conclusions, if possible. Movies, guest speakers, and interactions with other organizations are used in conjunction with presenting discussions.
Sigma Delta Mu
Sigma Delta Mu is the national Spanish Honor Society represented at Ocean County College by the Alpha chapter. One of the purposes of Sigma Delta Mu is to honor those who seek and attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and culture of Spanish-speaking people.
Society for Collegiate Journalist
Purpose is to elevate the cause of mass communications at the collegiate level; to teach the ethics, and mechanics of good communication; to encourage student participation in local campus communications media; to foster the mutual welfare of the student media to develop the truest fraternal spirit among its members; and to reward student communicators for their efforts, services, and accomplishments by admission to its membership.
Seascape – Student Literary Magazine
The members of this group publish “Seascape,” OCC’s literary magazine. Constructive criticism of both classical and modern literary works is sponsored by the club through discussions, guest speakers, and individual analysis. Download Seascape (PDF).
Viking News – Student Newspaper

The Viking News is a weekly student newspaper which functions as a channel of communication and exchange among all elements of the college community. A member of the Associated College Press, the Viking news has attained the ACP’s All-American honor rating, the highest rating possible in collegiate journalism.
WOCC – Student Radio
The Student-run Radio Station provides its members with practical experience in all aspects of the field of broadcasting and management of a radio station.
Television – Year in Review
The Year in Review of OCC is devoted to accurately portraying campus life for each successful college year. Students wanting to demonstrate their creativity are urged to join.
Ballroom Dancing Club
The purpose of this club is to provide students the unique opportunity to learn, practice, participate in, and ultimately enjoy ballroom dancing in an optimistic, amiable, and encouraging atmosphere
Dance Club
The purpose of the OCC Dance Club is to promote the art and performance of dance. Club activities include the production of two annual dance recitals and attendance of the performances and master classes that are offered in the Ocean and Monmouth County areas. These activities give members an opportunity to enhance their dance abilities and to learn the processes involved in the production, rehearsal and performance of a dance show.
Music Club

Music Club is an official Student Life Club, providing a platform for students to:
- Gain experience and feel more comfortable in music performance (informally and formally).
- Share and gain, through constructive review and critique, new ideas in performance and composition.
- Create opportunities for collaboration and collaborative performance.
- Create opportunities for students to experience and appreciate many types of music.
All skill levels are welcome, although playing an instrument is not necessary to be a member of Music Club. Kean students may also participate, byt may not be elected as a club officer.
Meetings are held every Friday, from September through May in the Grunin Center Room A117 from 1:30-2:45 pm. New members are welcome at any time.
Members attend meetings and support events planned by the club. Every September they also elect officers.

Jazz Band
Jazz Band is a one-credit music course, but also functions like a club outside of class time, in that it performs extensively on campus and in the region. We pursue and demand a high standard of excellence, and encourage individual and corporate uniqueness and creativity. Interested students should contact Prof. Marowitz for an audition/interview. Improv and Theater Club

This club provides students with a forum to hone their skills in Acting. Improv Nights, stand-up comedy performances, one-act plays.
Repertory Theatre Company
Artistic/Producing/Director: Paul Chalakani
Cultivation and development of student and community interest in dramatic productions and, more broadly, in theatre arts is the main concern of the Ocean County College Repertory Theatre Company. Currently the Repertory Theatre produces five theatrical production per season.
Speech Competition

The Annual Speech Competition held each academic year at the end of the Spring semester is opened to all students who have completed COMM-154 Fundamentals of Public Speaking within the academic year. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three contestants.
Arabic Club
The purpose of this organization is to promote the appreciation of the Arabic culture through educational and social activities such as film showing, lectures, visits to museums, and teaching Arabic text.
East Asian Student Alliance
The purpose of this club is to develop the cultural understanding of the East Asian students and their societies.
French Club
This organization is dedicated to the promotion of French culture and information about France and French-speaking countries. In recent years, it has offered such diverse educational events as live recitals of French and Canadian Chansons, bus trips to art museums, lectures on art and literature, student reports on life in France, film showings, and dinners prepared according to French recipes.
SALSA (Student Alliance for Latino Solidarity/ Achievement)
SALSA is devoted to promoting awareness of the rich cultural diversity which is encompassed by the terms Latino
Sign Language Society (ITP)
Promotes interest and awareness in deaf culture and society through the use of American Sign Language. Also, to provide greater opportunities for Interpreter Training Program students to network and improve signing skills.
Camera Club
The purpose of this organization is to share information on creative photography. The club sponsors lectures and field trips which are designed to increase awareness of techniques of photography and film processing.
Motion Picture Club
The purpose of this club is to see how film influences American society. Students will watch movies and discuss how they ultimately affect our society.
The Viking Video Club
The Viking Video Club tapes and edits activities at OCC and provides media support for other clubs. The Viking Video club is open to all students and maintains a Facebook page which exhibits all of their videos, friends, and members. Students are provided an opportunity to learn camera skills, multi camera shoots, editing, uploading video to social media sites, and DVD production. The club activities also provide anarchiveof events at the College such as Open House, Music concerts, speeches bypoliticians, and interviews with other club presidents.
insite – Public Arts Club
Insite aims to create and make public artworks on campus. Ranging from sculptural projects to photocopies and fliers, insite allows students to consider the value of the arts, but also experiment with the transformation that site specific artwork undergoes when it enters the public sphere.
