SUMMARY:Sentimental Journey Big Band
DESCRIPTION: \nGet Tickets \nMain Stage\n(Building 11A)\nAdult $28\, Senior $24\n \n \nAbout the Show\nIt Might As Well Be Swing\nAn Inspired Journey Through the Classics of Swing and the melodic gems of other styles that have been transformed by Jazz. \nJoin us for “It Might As Well Be Swing.” You can count on Sentimental Journey Big Band to bring you the best of the Swing Era\, while vocalist Altha Morton sings the jazzed up versions of country\, pop\, and R&B hits. What makes this year’s program unique is a vibrant celebration of the enduring dialogue between classical music and jazz. From Bizet to Verdi\, and Paganini to Rimsky- Korsakov\, composers have long inspired jazz artists with their timeless themes and harmonic structures. This performance explores how classical compositions are transformed through jazz arrangements—whether in the smooth sophistication of a big band\, the daring freedom of improvisation\, or the rhythmic vitality of swing. Artists like Glenn Miller\, Les Brown\, the Dorsey brothers\, and Benny Goodman took these compositions to the top of the charts! \nWhether you’re a lover of pop\, classical\, or swing\, this program promises a foot-tapping\, soul-stirring ride through music that refuses to stay in one lane.

SUMMARY:Raul Midón
DESCRIPTION: \nGet Tickets \nGia Maione Prima Foundation Studio Theatre\n(Building 12)\nTickets $35\n \n \nAbout the Event\nBlind Singer-Songwriter Guitarist Raul Midón is nothing if not prolific. His 14th and latest album\, Lost & Found is a blend of what he calls “smooth folk\,” “alt-pop” and “jazz.” A master at combining genres\, “his music suggests a three way fusion of Stevie Wonder\, Bobby McFerrin and José Feliciano\,” New York Times. Midón recently debuted the album’s first single\, the uplifting bluesy pop song Keep On Keeping On on The Jennifer Hudson Show (December 2023). \nJoining him on this body of work are his friends\, industry veterans\, Andres Forero (Hamilton\, Phish\, U2) Drums & Percussion\, Richard Hammond (Hamilton) bass\, Federico Pena (Black Lives) keyboards & piano. The anthemic Next Time\, a “galloping rock waltz” is a co-write with New York fixture Mike Errico\, who plays on it as well. String arrangements were provided by Andrew Sherman. \nLost & Found\, the album’s moniker which Midón calls “smooth folk” or folk with harmonic surprises is a celebration of redemption. The lyrics were inspired by his listening to Bob Dylan’s reading of his poem\, Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie. \nWhen We Remember is a country-tinged song that includes a stint of Raul playing banjo. He might have reached out to Bela Fleck but he’s held his own here and he does it from the comfort of his basement studio. To do this Midón has had to learn the art of engineering. The technology for the blind is not consistent and it’s a constant struggle\, one he continues to confront on a daily basis. He’s been assisted here by New York recording engineer\, Michael O’Reilly\, whom he met while making his major label debut State of Mind under the careful eye of legendary producer\, Arif Mardin. Raul has worked with “Mike” extensively on many albums since those early days including the Grammy Nominated Bad Ass and Blind. \nA Condition of Love co-written with Ethiopian R&B artist Wayna is a smoldering philosophical love song. The Ganga Song is a bouncy ska-ish take on the latest cannabis craze. \nThis compilation of ten original songs was released in April 2024. Physical copies\, both cd and vinyl\, are available worldwide at indie stores\, Amazon.com\, and FNAC in Europe. \nThis marks Midón’s 2nd album released on his own imprint ReKondite ReKords (ReKo ReKo). \nEclectic Adventurist was his first\, released in November 2022. During the lockdown Raul fulfilled a long-time dream of recording a guitar duets album with some of his favorite guitarists including Lionel Loueke\, Romero Lubambo & Mike Stern. From popular Letterman bass guitarist Will Lee\, “Eclectic Adventurist is a great surprise at every turn- a beautifully performed\, meticulously-recorded collection of gorgeous interplayfulness.” Eclectic Adventurist is now available in vinyl and cd wherever music is sold in the U.S. & physical copies will be released in Europe in 2025 via L’Autre Distribution. \nHe has worked with countless legends in the industry including Bill Withers\, Herbie Hancock\, & Sting. In 2022 he paid tribute to Joni Mitchell with the National Symphony Orchestra arranged and conducted by Vince Mendoza at The Kennedy Center alongside Lalah Hathaway\, Jimmie Herrod & Renee Fleming (PBS Next at the Kennedy Center). He received two Grammy nominations back-to-back in 2017 and 2018 for his albums Bad Ass and Blind and If You Really Want in the Best Jazz Vocal Category. In 2019 he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater\, University of Miami. In 2021 he was given the Disability Rights Ambassador of the Year award\, presented to him by his colleague Jason Mraz. \n \nThis event is funded\, in part\, by the Ocean County College Foundation.

SUMMARY:Krakauer & Tagg’s Good Vibes Explosion
DESCRIPTION: \nGet Tickets \n \nMain Stage\n(Building 11A)\nTickets $39\nFree for OCC students \n \nKrakauer & Tagg’s Good Vibes Explosion is a touring project that was born in the midst of the pandemic lockdowns of 2020. Conceived and created by Grammy-nominated “ebullient clarinet wizard” (Time Out NY) David Krakauer and multi-instrumentalist/producer Kathleen Tagg\, this project showcases a multi-generational/high-octane group of collaborators from very different backgrounds\, hailing from the USA\, Canada\, Iran and South Africa. \nTogether they embrace the diversity of today’s America through their unique take on a multitude of traditional roots musics\, bringing their enormous musical and cultural diversity to the project and collaborating to create powerful original material. Old forms are celebrated both by bringing them into a 21st century sound-world and expanding the context to make room for new stories. \nFeatured on shows such as NPR’s Morning Edition and Radio France International (RFI) Sessions Live\, this project was created in response to the current climate of polarization that pervades our daily lives. In these uncertain times\, it’s a chance to come together to celebrate our common humanity and foster joy\, positivity and togetherness. \nTheir album\, Mazel Tov Cocktail Party\, has received rave reviews across North America and Europe: \nFrance’s Le Monde says: “a breath of fresh air\, an incentive to dance…In the face of the overwhelming negativity and alarming rise of hatred and intolerance in today’s world\, let’s breathe and dance together…More than a suggestion\, an injunction” \nRoots World says: “An informal cocktail party typically lasts a few hours\, and this one ends all too soon. 5 stars” \nThey have performed at venues that include Paris’ famed 2000-seater Théâtre du Châtelet and Vienna’s Porgy & Bess Club\, and in venues large and small in France\, Holland\, Austria and the USA. \nKrakauer’s klezmer-influenced clarinet leads the way along with Tagg’s quirky keys\, electronics\, electric cello & production; Martin Shamoonpour’s high-energy contributions on daf\, riq\, darbuka\, jaw harp and flutes; Jerome Harris’ driving bass lines and vocals; rapper and singer Sarah MK’s evocative vocals in Québécois French and English; and Yoshie Fruchter’s wailing oud and electric guitar. In addition\, electronic beats by Jeremy Flower\, Socalled and Selwa Abd (aka Bergsonist) round out the sound for layering with the live performance. The project was initially created in isolation\, individually and remotely in living rooms and basements in New York\, upstate NY and Canada- with band members meeting in person for the first time a year after the project was recorded and the music videos were made. \nTheir influences are global\, but the sound they create collectively has produced something uniquely their own. Familiar dance forms such as Polka or Square Dance never sounded this way before\, with hand drumming\, propulsive electronic beats\, lyrics calling for catharsis and positivity\, deep grooves and Krakauer’s wailing clarinet crying out for us to join together\, celebrate and feel the power in our aliveness. \nDavid Krakauer\, clarinet and vocals\nKathleen Tagg\, producer\, piano\, keyboard\, accordion\, cello and sampler/electronics (Bella’s Calypso)\nSarah MK\, rap vox and vocals\nYoshie Fruchter\, electric guitar and oud\nJerome Harris\, electric bass and vocals\nMartin Shamoonpour\, daf and jaw’s harp

\n \nThis event is funded\, in part\, by the Ocean County College Foundation and the Latino Institute.

SUMMARY:Brass Queens
DESCRIPTION: \nGet Tickets \n \nMain Stage\n(Building 11A)\nTickets $24\nFree for OCC Students \n \nBrass Queens is a female-led\, New York-based brass band that has been dominating the brass band scene since 2019. \nFinding that they shared similar frustrations about the emerging brass band scene in New York City\, co-founders Alex Harris and Ally Chapel came together to form a group dedicated to showcasing the talents of female musicians in a landscape that was dominated by male musicians and bandleaders. After debuting in March 2019\, Brass Queens grew to be a fixture in the local music scene and was dubbed “the hardest working band in town” by their peers. The Queens gained a dedicated following through outdoor performances on the streets of Brooklyn and playing pop-up events in their community through the pandemic. \nA core value of the band is to play for as many audiences as possible to increase the visibility of female musicians in brass bands. Brass Queens tour regularly across the country and internationally. Recent highlights include a New Year’s Eve performance in Telluride\, multiple nights at Favela Chic in New Orleans\, and a sold out show at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit. They also make appearances on festival stages including the Ottawa Jazz Festival\, Northlands Music Festival\, MusikFest\, Duck Jazz Festival\, and multiple appearances at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Brass Queens has played major events like The Met Gala and David Byrne’s “Amazing Humans Doing Amazing Things!” Variety Show\, and for notable clients including New Balance\, Chanel\, Saks Fifth Avenue\, Tiffany & Co.\, Bombas\, Perrier\, Facebook\, Instagram\, and Pinterest. They have also performed on national television on Good Morning America\, and had multiple shows at iconic New York venues like The Capitol Theater\, Blue Note Jazz Club\, and Brooklyn Bowl. They are also the 2023 winners of We Love NYC’s Rider’s Choice Award\, after the people of New York voted the Queens as their favorite of the MTA’s Music Under New York’s roster of subway performers. \nThe band has developed a signature style that sits right at the intersection of the Big Apple and the Big Easy. Their sound is deeply inspired by and pays homage to the New Orleans brass band tradition while injecting the upbeat\, multifaceted energy of their New York home into each performance. The result is a nonstop party: a Brass Queens show will have you singing along to classic pop hits\, dancing your heart out to reggaeton\, and feeling like you’ve been transported to Frenchman Street. In February 2021\, Brass Queens released their debut EP Royal Street\, which takes listeners on a six-song journey beginning in the heart of New York City with a cover of Cameo’s Candy\, down to Royal St. with their take on a New Orleans traditional\, Little Liza Jane. In November 2023\, the band released their first full-length album titled Black & Gold\, which is an ode to the Brass Queen’s incredible early fanbase who supported the band from the virtual performances and socially-distanced street corners during the COVID-19 pandemic\, to the crowded clubs and packed venues of today. Less than a year later\, Brass Queens released their second full-length album and their first album of all-original music titled Hot Tub Sessions Vol. I.

SUMMARY:Dancing at Lughnasa
DESCRIPTION: \nGet Tickets \n\nBlack Box Theater\n(Building 11B)\nAdults $24\, Seniors $22\nFree for OCC Students\nGeneral Admission Seating \n \nAbout the Show\nThis extraordinary play is the story of five unmarried sisters eking out their lives in a small village in Ireland in 1936. We meet them at the time of the festival of Lughnasa\, which celebrates the pagan god of the harvest with drunken revelry and dancing. Their spare existence is interrupted by brief\, colorful bursts of music from the radio\, their only link to the romance and hope of the world at large. The action of the play is told through the memory of the illegitimate son of one of the sisters as he remembers the five women who raised him: his mother and four maiden aunts. He is only seven in 1936\, the year his elderly uncle\, a priest\, returns after serving for twenty-five years as a missionary in a Ugandan leper colony. For the young boy\, two other disturbances occur that summer. The sisters acquire their first radio\, whose music transforms them from correct Catholic women to shrieking\, stomping banshees in their own kitchen. And he meets his father for the first time\, a charming Welsh drifter who strolls up the lane and sweeps his mother away in an elegant dance across the fields. From these small events spring the cracks that destroy the foundation of the family forever. Widely regarded as Brian Friel’s masterpiece\, this haunting play is Friel’s tribute to the spirit and valor of the past. \nPerformances\nFriday\, March 13 • 7:30pm (This performance will be interpreted in ASL by students from the Interpreter Training Program.)\nSaturday\, March 14 • 2:00pm\nSaturday\, March 14 • 7:30pm\nSunday\, March 15 • 2:00pm \nFriday\, March 20 • 7:30pm\nSaturday\, March 21 • 2:00pm\nSaturday\, March 21 • 7:30pm\nSunday\, March 22 • 2:00pm \nAbout the OCC Repertory Theater Company\nUnder the direction of Performing Arts Program Chair Paul Chalakani\, the mission of the OCC/REP is to create opportunities for college and community participation in various rich and diverse theatrical experiences.
