DESCRIPTION:Nat Adderley\, Jr. spent 25 years as the Music Director for rhythm and blues singer Luther Vandross\, but after Vandross passed away in 2005\, Adderley\, Jr.\, the son of trumpeter Nat Adderley and nephew of alto saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley\, returned to his roots as a jazz pianist\, mixing hard bop with R&B. \nIn October 2025\, Adderley released his first jazz album as a leader Took So Long. The album soared to the top of the JazzWeek charts\, spending six weeks at Number 1. DownBeat Magazine’s Joshua Myers called it “a near perfect mixture of standard jazz tunes and popular musical mainstays.” \nOn September 13\, at the Gia Maione Prima Foundation Studio Theatre\, Adderley\, Jr.\, will be performing selections from Took So Long. In addition to his original title tune\, you’ll hear such songs as Bronislaw Kaper’s “Green Dolphin Street”\, Dizzy Gillespie’s “Con Alma”\, Burton Lane’s “Old Devil Moon”\, and “Superstar”\, written by Leon Russell for The Carpenters\, but memorably recorded by Luther Vandross. \nIn the DownBeat review\, Joshua Myers reminded his readers that\, “It is simply cool to hear once again how interpretations of sounds made famous by Stevie Wonder\, The Stylistics\, and Aretha Franklin beautifully coexist alongside those written by Billie Holiday and Dizzy Gillespie. For more information about the program or to apply please click here go.ocean.edu/DisplacedHomemakers \n \nOur trauma compass series is funded in part through contract with the Division on Women and expanded by sponsorship from the Ocean County College Foundation. \n \nHosted in partnership with Preferred Behavioral Health and delivered by a licensed mental health clinician\, join us as we learn how chronic stress changes the processing power of the brain and the unique nervous system overwhelm. \nIdentify triggers and begin building a “toolkit” for the education and workplace environments. \n\nLearn to recognize personal shifts between hyper-arousal (fight/flight) and hypo-arousal (freeze/collapse)\nBuild internal body awareness to catch physiological stress before it turns into behavior explosion or shutdown\nMaster discreet\, body-based tools to down-regulate the nervous system in real time without drawing attention from classmates or coworkers\n\n \nDate: Tuesdays 9/15\, 9/22\, 9/29 and 10/6/2026 \nTime: 10:30-11:30 am \nPlace: Ocean County College\, Library (building 3) room 110 \n****This is a 4-part mini-series. SUMMARY:Dementia Man\, An Existential Journey
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to believe in a meaningful future with a neurocognitive disease? \nDementia Man\, An Existential Journey is the award-winning autobiographical story of a man who faces his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by actor and playwright Samuel A. Simon. \nIn this full-length theatrical piece\, Simon takes the stage as a man facing his cognitive decline and asks the hard questions of what to do next in the face of what he calls “an existential journey.” It is a peek into the head and heart of the struggle with a broken medical system and a personal and family challenge. The play challenges the audience to imagine a meaningful future for the millions of people with neurocognitive disease\, with accommodation and adaptation. \nThe show is approximately 70 minutes long and will feature a Q&A Session at the end. \nTickets purchased through GruninCenter.org are guaranteed authentic.
