OCC’s Apprenticeship Programs Allow Students to ‘Earn While They Learn’

Earn While You Learn

The College provides innovative opportunities for students to connect with potential employers and develop the skills they need to advance their careers.

Working in partnership with local employers, Ocean County College has established apprenticeship programs that offer eligible students the chance to earn while they learn. Apprentices receive a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction, expanding their skills and building the confidence that comes from hands-on experience without burdensome out-of-pocket costs. All apprentices receive a salary for the on-the-job training, and some employers will also pay during the classroom portion of the apprenticeship. The programs are covered through funding from the New Jersey HealthWorks Apprenticeship Grant.

Through a new partnership with Walgreens, OCC’s Pharmacy Technician (PT) program provides the latest example of how apprenticeship programs can increase career potential and earning power. The program, recognized by ASHP/ACPE, provides apprentices with the knowledge and skills to prepare for certification exams and earn industry-recognized credentials. The apprentices receive valuable career training, get paid as they learn, and once fully trained, become eligible for career advancement in a growing healthcare field. This collaboration between OCC and Walgreens creates opportunities for students interested in working as a pharmacy tech as well as existing workers looking to further their careers.

In addition to the new partnership with Walgreens, Ocean County College has partnered with CVS to create employment opportunities for students who successfully complete the classroom instruction. Once hired, employees have three months to take the PTCB licensing exam.

The College also offers additional apprenticeship programs through collaboration with several participating local employers

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

The New Jersey Department of Health has partnered with Ocean County College to train incumbent employees through the CHW program. Employees from multiple healthcare providers across the state receive their related technical instruction (RTI) online through OCC, and complete hands-on learning while working on the job.

Apprenticeship programs offer substantial benefits to both the student and the participating employers. Students obtain valuable career training and credentials, gain work experience through on-the-job learning, and earn a competitive salary with opportunities for pay increases. Employers participating in the programs are helping to develop a highly-skilled, diverse workforce that fills skills gaps and increases productivity while reducing the cost of recruiting new staff.
