If you are looking to get your start in a professional kitchen or boost your food-related career, the Culinary Foundations Certificate is for you. This program will provide you with essential skills and the foundational methods of cooking that form the basis of cuisines around the world. Learn knife skills, cooking techniques, plating and presentation, kitchen and food safety, nutrition, and methods for preparing specific types of foods, including foods for special diets.
This hybrid program consists of online video instruction complimented by live sessions on campus to practice your newly-gained skills. The program is recognized by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation as an Approved Program and the World Association of Chefs Societies as an Approved Quality Culinary Training.
Upon completion of this course, you’ll earn Culinary Foundations Certification issued by Rouxbe as well as six college credits you can apply to programs offered in the School of Business & Social Sciences at Ocean County College. This certificate is among the various Specialized Career trainings offered on campus.
The Culinary Foundations Certificate prepares you for exciting jobs in the field, such as:
- Food blogger
- High school culinary teacher (When combined with teaching credentials)
- Restaurant line cook
- Food and beverage manager
Upon completing the Culinary Foundations Certificate, you will:
- have full knowledge of and be able to demonstrate food and kitchen safety.
- know knife skills, cooking techniques and methods, and baking and pastry basics.
- be able to make decisions related to personal health and our food supply
- be aware of various dietary restrictions that could influence cooking.
As a hybrid course, the 26-unit program consists of online video and learning content complimented by live, face-to-face, on-campus sessions for practice and assessment of newly gained skills, facilitated by our esteemed faculty, a professionally-trained chef who is passionate about the food and beverage industry.

College Lecturer Sean Bips, is a Professional Chef Instructor, Hospitality Professor, and International Event Planner. He has been teaching Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Tourism Management for over 12 years in both the United States and across Europe. Sean’s education consists of the following credentials: Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from The Pennsylvania State University; Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from The Culinary Institute of America; Executive MBA from Durham Business School (Europe). His areas of expertise include culinary instruction, developing successful sales campaigns, marketing strategies, and international event planning.
