Student Short Film Competition
‘Keep It Reel’: OCC’s 1st Annual Student Short Film Competition welcomes submissions of student-made films of no more than 10 minutes. Students may submit either fiction or documentary. The film should include some representation of global identity in our local community.
Example Concepts
- A documentary about someone you know who immigrated to the US and has a fascinating story to tell.
- A film about a landmark, a business, or a restaurant in New Jersey with a rich, international history.
- A work of fiction featuring characters from one of the many multi-ethnic and religious populations living in Toms River or New Jersey.
Prizes
- The Grand Prize winner will receive a digital video camera to continue their film career.
- A ‘Student Choice Prize,’ winner will receive $200.Students will select Student Choice winners via a poll.
- Prize-winning films will be screened at The Grunin Center during the Fall semester.

- Please use the Register or Submit Your Video form to register for the contest, submit entries or ask questions.
- Students under the age of 18 can register and enter the contest by emailing an entry form with their parent’s signature to Professor Gianotti at pgianotti@ocean.edu.

Guidelines
- Film submissions must be original material, and must not have been submitted previously to any other competition, and no more than 10 minutes running.
- Students may submit either fiction or documentary material.
- The film should include some representation of global identity in our local (For example, an interview with a relative who immigrated to the US., or a film with characters who come from one of the many multi-ethnic and religious populations that live in Toms River or New Jersey-at-large.)
- The Grand Prize winner of the competition will receive a brand-new digital video camera to continue their film In addition, there will be a ‘Student Choice Prize,’ which will be $200. Student Choice winners will be decided by a poll of all submitted films. Prize-winning films will be screened at The Grunin Center during the Fall semester.
Additional rules: All materials appearing in the film must be the student’s own work, and must not include any copyrighted materials or materials which are the legally-protected intellectual property of anyone else. This includes music, props, settings, etc. All submissions are made with the implicit agreement that judges’ decisions about the appropriateness of submitted contents will be final. Films containing nudity or offensive language will not be accepted.
Submission Instructions:
- Only MP4 files will be accepted.
- Required naming convention for submitted files is “Last_Name_First_Name_ID#_Film_Title.MP4”
- Students should upload their short films to YouTube. The link to the video should be UNLISTED. (So that it cannot be searched.) However, the video should NOT be marked ‘Private.’ All judges should have access without needing permission.
For students who have never made a film before, many useful websites and videos exist which can help you with some of the basics of filmmaking.
