MATH PLACEMENT INFORMATION

Which Math Course Should I Take?

Students should select a math course based on their math placement score and their major.

Math placement and developmental courses have changed effective Catalog Year 2017-2018.

Students enrolled prior to Fall 2017: scroll to bottom of page for information.

All students in the 2017 Catalog or later must follow the below guidelines.

Students required to take MATH 023

Students required to take MATH 023 will see MATH 023 as “Not Started” on their degree audit (My Progress) screen in Student Planning. Students must complete this course prior to enrolling in a college level math course.

  • Students must enroll in MATH 023 prior to completing their 15th credit.
  • After completing MATH 023, students should select their college level math course based on their major and in consultation with their academic advisor.
    • Students not intending to take pre-calculus can select from MATH 151, MATH 156, MATH 158, MATH 171, MATH 181
    • Students intending to take pre-calculus can enroll in MATH 161

Students not requiring MATH remediation

Students not requiring Math remediation will see MATH 023 as “Completed” on their degree audit (My Progress) screen in Student Planning.

  • Students should consult the “Other Courses” section of their degree audit (My Progress) screen to determine which math courses they are eligible to take.*

* Students should select their college level math course based on their major and in consultation with their academic advisor.

Students who see “MATH-ACCU1: Math Placement Score 61-75” in “Other Courses”:

  • Students not intending to take pre-calculus can select from MATH 151, MATH 156, MATH 158, MATH 171, MATH 181
  • Students intending to take pre-calculus can enroll in MATH 161

Students who see “MATH-ACCU2: Math Placement Score 76+” in “Other Courses”:

  • Students not intending to take pre-calculus can select from MATH 151, MATH 156, MATH 158, MATH 171, MATH 181
  • Students intending to take pre-calculus can enroll in MATH 165
  • Students intending to take pre-calculus should consider taking the College Level Math Test to see if they can place directly into pre-calculus or calculus. This test can be scheduled at go.ocean.edu/test

Students who enrolled at OCC prior to Fall 2017 and placed into MATH 011 and/or MATH 012:

  • Students who completed MATH 012 can enroll in a college-level math course based on their major and in consultation with an academic advisor
  • Students who still need to take MATH 011 and/or MATH 012 should consult with an academic advisor
