ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Dave Marowitz has extensive professional experience in jazz performance, jazz arranging and composing, and as a jazz educator. Formerly a recorded arranger for Buddy Rich and his Big Band, a stint on trombone for the Lionel Hampton Big Band, a jazz band leader, and much freelance work in jazz, classical, and popular idioms, he enjoys passing on his knowledge and experience with students at Ocean County College.

Ocean County College Jazz Band

He served as a band director and a music teacher in N.J. public schools for 36 years and was voted ‘Teacher of The Year’ by peer faculty in 2013. He has served as clinician for various festivals/workshops and at New Jersey Music Educators Association conferences. Dave joined the music faculty at OCC in the spring semester of 2013, and was awarded the Adjunct Excellence Award on May 22, 2019. In September of 2023, after taking and passing a rigorous exam, Dave received the esteemed Certificate in Jazz History from Swing University @ Jazz At Lincoln Center in New York City. He is currently writing jazz arrangements for: Dave Chamberlain’s Band of Bones (based in New York City) and U.S. Navy Commodores Jazz Ensemble (based in Washington, D.C.)

Dave is published in Teaching MusicJazzEd, and The Instrumentalist magazines, and his own jazz bands have been reviewed in Downbeat magazine. He was interviewed on the air by jazz radio station KUVO (Denver) on First Take with Lando and Chavis, and has several television interview appearances as well.

In addition to directing the OCC Jazz Band, Dave teaches Intro To Jazz History, Beginning Jazz Theory and Improvisation, and Introduction to World Music , and Low Brass at Ocean County College. He was artistic advisor to The Three Sails Jazz Festival 2015, and is a Grunin Center For The Performing Arts Advisory Committee Member
