What You Will Learn
Students in this concentration will obtain the historical knowledge of American cinema and television and develop skills in screenwriting, producing, the business of film, acting, photography, and film analysis. The courses in this concentration emphasize the importance of having a general knowledge of film as well as being able to navigate a career. Students will be able to adapt to the ongoing changes the industry makes and know how to leverage a pitch meeting.
Core skills and competencies include:
- Use critical terminology to explore and analyze the filmmaker’s craft
- Create, develop, and write screenplays for film, television, and web shorts
- Examine the structural and business differences between film and television mediums
- Categorize film genres and deconstruct their evolution for American audiences
- Differentiate between American and international films across history and culture
- Master the art of the pitch meeting and professional industry navigation

Film Studies majors often pursue careers in media and entertainment, including roles such as film and video editors, producers, directors, screenwriters, and production assistants. Many graduates also work in related fields like digital media, broadcasting, or marketing, and some continue to graduate programs in film, media studies, or communications to advance creative or academic careers
