A survey of the history of Japanese art from Neolithic times to the present. Topics will include a wide range of art, craft, and architecture including Buddhist art and its ritual context, the aristocratic arts of the courts, monochromatic Zen ink paintings, the prints and paintings of the Floating World, and contemporary artists and designers. The class will focus on the unique development of Japanese art, its contributions to Western Art, and its significant influence upon modern world culture.
