Welcome to the Tutoring Center

The mission of the Tutoring Center is to provide an inclusive learning environment for all students, faculty, and staff. Using active and collaborative approaches rooted in best practices and current research, the Center supports student retention and persistence. By designing innovative programs and integrating advances in technology, the Center supports learners in developing the skills needed to progress in the workforce and higher stakes educational environments.

Making a Tutoring Appointment

You can make an appointment by visiting this link: https://traccloud.go-redrock.com/ocean/

If you have difficulty scheduling with the link above, please give us a call at (732) 255-0400, ext. 2431.

Appointments slots fill up quickly. We strongly encourage you to make an appt. as soon as you feel like you are struggling with your course material.

In-person sessions take place in the Tutoring Center in INST 218 (building #5).

Students are required to abide by the following scheduling rules:

  • Students can have a maximum of 3 appts. per course per week.
  • Students can schedule one appt. per course at a time.
  • Students can schedule one appt. per course per day.
  • Students can miss no more than 3 appts. in a semester. Missing three appts. will restrict your scheduling permissions and you will be required to contact the center to schedule.
  • Students must cancel with at least 12 hours’ notice. A late cancellation will count as a missed appt.

To make an online appointment with a tutor in TracCloud, click the link above and then follow the linked instructions. Choose an appointment slot that is labeled either Online or Online OR In-Person. Do NOT choose an appointment unless you see the words Online.

You can access your Webex session at the scheduled time either by returning to TracCloud or through the link in your Outlook appointment confirmation.

Keep in mind that the Canvas Inbox is NOT your OCC email.

Students are required to abide by the following scheduling rules:

The Writing Center offers asynchronous tutoring! You can submit your assignment online, and a tutor will review it and send your submission back within 48 hours to 72 business hours.

Here’s how:

  • Complete our Asynchronous Tutoring Writing Submission Form
  • You’ll be asked to provide the following:
    • Name
    • Student ID number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Course number (ex. ENGL-151)
    • A detailed description of your writing assignment
    • 2 – 3 questions you have about the assignment
    • Upload your work as a doc. or docx. file. We are unable to access PDF and Google Drive files

Feedback will be emailed to you within 24-72 hours at your OCC email, which can be accessed from your Ocean Connect page.

Please cancel any appointment you are unable to attend as soon as possible. If you do not attend your appointment or cancel an appointment less than 12 hours in advance, your appointment will be marked as Missed.  Students who accumulate three or more Missed appointments will not be able to make appointments in TracCloud for the remainder of the current semester.

However, you will still be able to make appointments by calling (732) 255-0400, ext. 2431.

To cancel your appointment in TracCloud:

  1. Log into your Ocean Connect account.
  2. Scroll down to the Tutoring Appointments button and click on it.
  3. Look for your list of upcoming appointments on the TracCloud dashboard.
  4. Click on the X next to the appointment you want to cancel.
  5. Return to the Ocean Connect page and click on the OCC Email button.
  6. Check to be sure your received an email confirming that your appointment has been canceled.

Welcome to the Tutoring Center at Ocean County College! The Tutoring Center provides free and friendly academic support in a wide variety of subjects to supplement your coursework. Professional and peer tutors and academic support leaders are well-trained and committed to helping you become independent, confident learners as you complete your degree and enter, or continue in, the workforce.

Policies

 

As representatives of the college, we believe in access and equity for all learners and work diligently to ensure that all students and staff feel safe using our services. To create a respectful and inclusive learning environment, the Tutoring Center upholds the OCC Code of Student Conduct (go.ocean.edu/code-of-student-conduct) and Campus Civility Statement. Students of the Ocean County College community are expected to uphold and abide by certain standards of conduct that form the basis of these practices.  By utilizing Center services, you must adhere to these policies as well as the following:

  • Tutoring Center staff members will treat students respectfully. In turn, students will treat the staff, and students who are working in the Tutoring Center respectfully.
  • Only you (the student) and tutoring staff members, may schedule or cancel tutoring appointments.
  • Students will
    • only schedule appointments with the full intent of attending,
    • arrive in a timely manner and will be as prepared as possible for the session. This includes any necessary items such as text books, assignment instructions, research, drafts, or notes.
    • Be as specific as possible about what you (the student) are hoping to achieve in the tutoring session.
    • Three (3) no-shows per semester may result in losing access to scheduling a session on one’s own. Should this happen, students must call 732-255-0400 ext. 2431 for scheduling assistance. Canvas resources and asynchronous support will still be readily available. Please visit our webpage for information on accessing our Canvas courses.
  • Tutoring sessions are conducted with students and tutoring staff member(s) only. Friends, family members and/or other guests are not permitted to attend any platform (in-person or virtual).
  • Anyone entering the Tutoring Center is to abide by all health safety guidelines and restrictions set forth by the College. Masks are currently optional in the tutoring center and on campus. This policy may change at any time as determined by state and local health guidelines and Ocean County College.
  • There is zero tolerance for any form of inappropriate or threatening behavior/language. Students will be asked to leave immediately, security will be notified, and a CARE or conduct report will be filed.
  • Tutoring and academic support sessions have a reasonable expectation for privacy. Any recording that takes place in a session, including in-person and/or via WebEx, will be used for academic purposes only. Any other use of a recording device is considered unauthorized, and will be asked to delete the recording and turn off the device. If necessary, the student will be asked to leave, security will be notified, and a CARE or conduct report will be filed.

  •  Students looking for assistance in courses outside of those listed above can still work with a tutor on a walk-in basis, as long as tutor availability allows. This allows for us to give priority to the aforementioned courses.
  • All courses will be supported by professor requested group sessions/in-class support. These sessions can be requested through this form: https://employee.ocean.edu/request-tutoring-sessions/
  • Group sessions will also be organized for courses outside of those listed above based on sufficient student demand. The Tutoring Center will work with the students to organize a group session.
  • Kean sections will no longer be supported by The Tutoring Center. Kean students will be directed to the Kean tutoring center.
  • All requests for courses not supported by tutoring should go through the form located here: https://www.ocean.edu/student-services/general-tutoring-suggestion-form/

Writing tutors support all courses with a writing component, including essays, reports, and distance learning class posts. Beyond that, writing tutors are able to assist with writing outside of class, including:

  • Resumes and cover letters
  • Transfer, scholarship, and internship application essays
  • Creative writing
  • GED/HSE test prep
  • General writing skills

Students making appointments for Writing Center support in CSIT, ENVI, MATH, CHEM, BIOL, and PHYS courses should choose “Writing Support for Math and Science Courses” as their course when making an appointment.

Peer Assisted Learning PALS are assigned to the following courses:

  • ACCT-161
  • ASLN-100

Supplemental Instructors are embedded in specific sections of the following courses. If you are enrolled in a section with an assigned Supplemental Instructor, you will receive a link to the a connected Canvas course and meeting times as part of your class.

Not sure where to begin? Here are a few tips:

  • STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. If you need to know if a BIOL, CHEM, CSIT, ENVI, MATH, PHYS or other STEM course is supported, check here.
  • Writing tutors can work with you on any course assignment that involves writing, including PowerPoints, as well as writing projects like job search and transfer materials.

Become a Peer Tutor

A peer tutor provides tutoring assistance to students in one-on-one or small group sessions. Utilizing Canvas, peer tutors create and develop supplemental resources for students. Students interested in becoming peer tutors need:

  • a B or better in the course they are interested in tutoring
  • must maintain an overall GPA above 3.0
  • must be enrolled in at least 6 credits in the upcoming semester
