Ocean County College offers exciting Study Abroad opportunities to promote cross cultural understanding and awareness of global perspectives.  All OCC study abroad seminars are led by OCC faculty members and are open to students and the community.  Eligible OCC students may apply for a Study Abroad Scholarship through the OCC Foundation (see information below).

This Study Abroad in Ireland (including both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) Travel Seminar (HIST 255 and SCIE 129) provides an unforgettable opportunity to experience the history, culture and people of Ireland while visiting its’ two capital cities.

  • This 9-Day trip includes walking tours, overnight stays, Capital cities in the Dublin and Belfast including entrance into Trinity College and the Book of Kells, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Dublin Castle.
  • We will have a guided tour of Kilmainham Gaol as well as a trip to see the beauty and grandeur of Powerscourt Estate, including the house, garden and waterfalls.
  • Traveling to ancient historical sites of Newgrange/Knowth and Hill of Tara and hearing about pagan times, druids, high chiefs and mystical spirits will be contrasted with modern history of Belfast an Derry as depicted in the internationally acclaimed mural art work which we will visit while in Northern Ireland.
  • In addition to the historical and cultural highlights of Ireland, the trip includes the opportunity to experience firsthand the warmth, hospitality and love of music during our Pub dinners an famous full Irish breakfasts.
  • Students will earn three credits and participate in a course (HIST 255: History and Culture of Ireland).
  • Members of the community are welcome to participate on an audit basis.

Class Option: HIST 255: History & Culture of Ireland or SCIE 129: Global Science for three college credits

Package Includes: Round-trip airfare, Full time Tour Manager, transport to and from airport from Ocean County College, all hotels (double occupancy; add $799 for single room), meals as noted on the itinerary, scheduled tours and admissions as noted on the itinerary, professional guides, trip insurance and Ocean County College  fees and tuition.

Not included: Beverages, airline baggage fees, personal expenses, any meals and activities not listed on the itinerary, and anything else not specifically listed above.

Please Note: This is an active travel seminar that includes walking and visiting some ancient sites. Participants much have the capability to adjust to time zone changes. Must interact effectively and appropriately with group members in rooming, travel and practicing daily personal hygiene. Must adhere and comply with structured time schedules including early morning departures and scheduled meal times. If you have concerns about the demands of the program, please consult with Dr. Reustle or Prof. Ramdeen and your physician before registering for the trip.

  • Community members are welcome to participate on an audit-credit basis.

This Study Abroad in Italy Travel Seminar (ARTS 188 and SCIE 129) will bring students to one of the most fascinating places to visit for Art and Architecture. The historical history behind all of the culture is astounding. This trip will lead students through some of the most beautiful and interesting aspects of Italy. The Sistine Chapel, Forum, Colosseum, Pantheon, Vatican Museums, Leonardo da Vinci Museum and the Museum Galileo are just some of the many sites we will visit including a River Cruise on the Tiber River. OCC hasn’t offered a trip to Italy in more than fifteen years, and never one in which two totally different disciplines–Science and Art–have been so completely intertwined, as they were in fact during the Renaissance. Moreover, the historic period ranges from 300 BCE to 1700 CE. Students will be able to study science and art history in Italy to include Rome and Florence, which will enhance their experience as global citizens.

  • This 12-Day trip includes walking tours and overnight stays
  • We will have a guided tour the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers,
    the Vatican Museums—the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, Scavi di Ostia Antica, Borghese Museum and Gallery including Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne, the Sleeping Hermaphradite statue, paintings by Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, and more.

    • Assisi: Basilica of San Francesco, the Basilica of Santa Clara, Eremo delle Carceri
    • Orvieto: a hill town that sits on a big chunk of tufo volcanic stone over-looking the Umbrian plains
    • Sienna: Gothic architecture and a Unesco World Heritage Site
    • Florence: Leonardo da Vinci Museum, Museum Galileo, Piazza del Duomo, Brunelleschi’s dome, Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio, the Cathedral and Baptistery of Florence as well as other magnificent churches and world-renowned museums.
  • Students can participate in (ARTS 188: World Art or SCIE 129: Global Science) one or both courses, while earning three or six college credits
  • Members of the community are welcome to participate on an audit basis.

This Study Abroad in Costa Rica Travel Seminar (ANTH 240 and/or SCIE 129) will be spending an amazing 9 days exploring Costa Rica at its best. Break the winter doldrums by traveling to Costa Rica to experience firsthand the wealth, which comes from the interaction of culture and the environment. Immerse yourself in the richness of Latino culture (a chance to brush up on your Spanish language skills) while exploring Costa Rica’s environmental treasures such as the Arenal Volcano and Baldi Hot Springs, a river tour the jungles of the Cano Negro Wild Life Refuge. Spend an overnight in the Monteverde Cloud Forest and walk above the clouds on the Monteverde Cloud Forest Sky Walk Tour. Wrap up the best of Costa Rica with two days in Guanacaste exploring the wealth and variety of Costa Rican culture.

Seminar Highlights

  • Arenal Volcano: The Arenal Volcano located along the base of this “Mountain of Fire.” Pack your bathing suit so you can enjoy a healthy and relaxing soak in the Baldi Hot Springs. If you are lucky, observe the Arenal Volcano erupting!

  • Jungle River Tour: A jungle river tour takes you into the 20,000-acre refuge where you can see iguanas, monkeys, turtles, and many species of birds. Dinner and overnight in Arenal.
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest: Transfer to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, nestled high in the Tilaran Mountain Range. This 26,000-acre private reserve is home to myriad plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and over 400 species of birds. Dinner and overnight in Monteverde Cloud Forest
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Sky Walk Tour: Morning Sky Walk Tour combines trails and suspension bridges above the canopy of Monteverde Cloud Forest for breathtaking views. Leisure time before dinner and overnight in Monteverde Cloud Forest.
  • Two Full Days in Guanacaste: Two days to discover and enjoy this fascinating area, with all meals included. Known for its fantastic beaches, there is much to do. Besides beaches, there are volcanoes, cloud forests, jungles, rivers, and water falls, where you can participate in a vast assortment of adventure and activities: whitewater rafting, canopy/zip line tours, horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, crocodile tours, snorkeling, scuba diving, turtle nesting tours, sailing, volcano tours, tubing, horseback riding, trekking, surfing lessons and surf tours. Relax on the beach, or try your hand at a seemingly endless list of activities.

Community Colleges for International Development (CCID)

Ocean County College is a proud member of Community Colleges for International Development.  CCID provides an international network for community colleges to further their internationalization initiatives and to enhance the development of a globally competent workforce for the communities they serve.

CCID also offers study abroad opportunities through its Troika program.  These short-term, faculty-led travel opportunities take students around the globe to study global business, culture, science, economics, healthcare and more.  Students earn college credits while experiencing a trip of a lifetime!

Scholarships For Study Abroad

OCC Foundation Scholarships:  The OCC Foundation frequently offers partial scholarships for full-time OCC students to participate in OCC-sponsored travel seminars and study abroad experiences.  Students should contact the professor leading the travel seminar for information on OCC Foundation scholarships available for that particular study abroad trip.

Outside Programs & Scholarships:  The US State Department lists study abroad programs and scholarship opportunities on their website.
